WFSB difficulties on 5/8/08

I have DISH Network, and this morning WFSB was appearing to have major technical problems. First of all, the entire 5:00am half hour was replaced by WSHM 3 from Springfield. Then at 5:30, WFSB magically appears and no mention is made of the mishap.

Finally, some time during the 6:00 hour, during one of Scot's forecasts, Eyewitness News Now 3.3 comes on and then Scot comes back fine. The screen was also stretched out this morning. At one point, I couldn't even see the bottom ticker.

Did anyone else have this problem? I don't know if there was any Teacher Appreciation nominations read during the 5AM hour because of this, as I sent in one.

That's because it's not considered broadcast ettiquite to acknowledge technical mishaps on the air.
I agree with another poster that it was probably a DISH problem.

Doesn't WFSB carry WSHM on their 3.2 subchannel?

I wonder if the OP was watching HD?

It sounds to me as if DISH is receiving WFSB-DT off-air, somehow the reception failed (either brief outage of the WFSB-DT transmitter or of DISH's antenna), and when it came back DISH's receiver locked on the wrong subchannel. It is also possible to send the entire multiplexed stream via fiber (for example, if DISH is carrying WSHM or the weather channel) so a path failure could still pull up the wrong subchannel even if over-the-air reception wasn't part of the loop.

I would doubt DISH would be downconverting WFSB-DT for their standard-definition customers. (I would expect there is a fiber feed from WFSB to some central location used by DISH to transfer Hartford local signals to their uplink)

They're still having problems this morning. Earlier I emailed Scot Haney and he said he received several emails about it and the station knows about the problem and is working on.

Why don't you ask Scott if Channel 3 is hiring? ;)
