WFSB Going Widescreen or HD?

During Live, Let's Make a Deal, and Price is Right, 3 was doing weather cut-ins with Mark Dixon, and the cut-ins were in 16X9. Is this a preview of what's soon to come?

I noticed that too while watching The Price is Right, and I do have an answer to your question. A while back, I sent a tweet to Jamie Calli (Senior Producer at WFSB), asking if they had plans to transition to HD. Here was our tweets to each other: http://twitter.com/#!/JamieCalliWFSB/status/25589722126483456

I'm glad they are planning to go HD and get up with the times; as they are the only local news left in the Hartford/New Haven market to not make the jump yet. But it's worth noting that they ONLY showed the weather maps (16:9), and the cameras around the state (4:3, but with pillarboxes). So it's still a work in progress, as they didn't actually show Mark Dixon during those cut-ins.

Thanks for the information.

They did show Mark during the 9:30 cut-in, in full 16X9. The rest of the cut-ins were only the maps/cameras as you described.

Oh, they did? Was it in HD or just widescreen SD?

I don't know. I was watching via Slingbox and didn't think to record it on the DVR to see when I got home. I was hoping maybe someone on here might have more information.

Aww, that's a shame. :( But, further adding proof to my information. I just read an article from January 10th in Broadcasting & Cable, and they said WFSB will be going HD in the first quarter of this year. The equipment has been ordered, and installations will soon be done. So, I'm definitely happy, as then ALL local news in our market will be HD.

I was surprised WFSB didn't just get HD equipment when they first moved into the new building. That wasn't a smart idea I feel. So the equipment they are currently using was that all purchased brand new?

My guess is that they simply brought over the cameras and equipment from their old facility to the new one. If I had to make a guess, poor planning or not enough funds to support it are likely causes of not having HD equipment right away. I too think they should of been in HD from the get go when they first moved into their new Rocky Hill facility. But, I guess it makes up they are finally getting caught up with the times.

It is strange that they're the market leader in nearly everything else. I've been watching WVIT more often for news lately, but the HD is only the second reason.
