WFSB screws up again

Really shameful for a major news station with a brand new state of the art facility but it appears their tech generator did not start.

I have only two questions... why werent they off grid (on generator) LONG before this happened?

Why isn't their plant wired to cross connect the generators? (the coffee pots, monitors, computers and house lights are fine).

I have a feeling there's going to be a Director of Engineering position opening soon!

Even our former employer in Stamford has fared well with their (new) generator and UPS system. ;)

I am proud to have withstood Paul's abuse... that kind of crap would NEVER have flown at GWNS. Is this "Lo"?

I don't think WFSB screwed up, it is just that electrical service in their location isn't very good. Rocky Hill loses power a lot. The electrical systems in New Haven and Hartford are more advanced and the other stations aren't as susceptible to outages.

The OP pointed out that the "screw up" was not having the generator ready in order to continue service uninterrupted. Given that they have a relatively new facility, one would expect that Meredith would have been more well prepared.

I alway wondering why stations dont use generators.Of they do have generators and they do not work.never checked .if I was a owner that would be one of the first things on my list to check beside the xmitter and ant.Meriden mountain always lose power in storms ,the power company should upgrade that area.

I wonder if this was a UPS failure?

Murphy's Law is always applicable. At my last job, we had a generator, which we tested under load for an hour or two every Thursday. One Monday, we had an ice storm take down commercial power. The generator ran fine for about 20 minutes -- then a radiator hose failed.....

Hmmmmmm, you might have a point there, that would certainly explain the squarewave audio bleeping that would fade away, something happening with PWM switching in the inverter, or something.

But still... there's usually a huge red switch on the biggies that say... "bypass".

Not on either of our two... One is bypassable at the switchgear out in the outer room. The other one, you have to open a door (marked with dire warnings of exposed high voltage -- except that if you open it, there *isn't* any exposed HV) and find the bypass there. That's the same one that won't pass valid utility power if the control board dies...

By the Way - What happened to WSAH? Huh? It was missing from the TV Line-up at my mom's condo in Southington. Both Channels 75 and 73 were blacked out on Monday.

They won't buy me a generator, though we have real management now, I'm going to get a little Honda to keep us on satellite, telco and Comcast fiber ring. I don't have the real estate either to place one.

Point is... WSAH is not a major market news outlet, its a little rimshot with entertainment and infomercials.

The -medium- sized Best we had at WTXX was like that too.... we had an external switch. But the real ones, the big ones, the ones the size of entire rooms, like we -used- to have at WSAH had a, ok, it was a sequence... you had to flip breakers in a certain order while standing on one foot...

Heck though, even the little 1KWs I have, hold the power button for 10 sec and it bypasses.

The first one I referred to is one of the ones that fills an entire room. (but the external switchgear is pretty easy to operate)
