WFTA 101.9

Just though I'd share that earlier today I was scanning the dial on 240 and picked up 101.9/WFTA FM loud and clear in Memphis...it didn't drop out at all, it sounded like a local station...except it's 123 miles away from Memphis haha. WFTA's a 50,000 watter out of Fulton, Mississippi...serves Tupelo.

Austin

No interference from Kiss in Jonesboro? That's rather impressive. Were you able to pick up any other Mississippi stations farther south, like Jackson or Greenville?

yea, I was able to pick up 48,000 watt 100.1 WQXB/Grenada, MS ...their about 100 miles away i think, normally on 100.1 you only hear 50,000 watter WASL from Dyersburg, TN which is only about 75 miles away.

The reason kiss-fm didn't interfere is that they are not at full power...haven't been in the last two years unless eab grew or borred money to fix their x-mitter...Dennis Rogers

Hey Dennis,
How does that work? CC still owns the station, but EAB is lma'ing.
Don't they have to be in compliance with the FCC about full power signals?
Maybe CC will close the deal on EAB since they are not fixing the transmitters.
Hope you are doing well.

Hey, J. Harmon...I'm doing fine, thank you very much. Re: Fcc rules on power output compliance....yes, eab is supposed to have all their stations at a certain power output, but I know Kiys-fm and Kfin-fm both have not been at full power for some time. My understanding about 101.9 (Kiys) is that clear channel has filed for and gotten fcc approval to move that frequency to Crawfordsville to put a signal on the Memphis Metro...but, that's been pending for about a year or more so who knows when or even if that will happen. Dennis Rogers

The FCC doesn't have the time or personnel to chase underpowered stations. If you can save more than the potential fine by running less than authorized, the bean counters will take the fine. If your 3 dB loss at half power is only denying coverage to the soy bean crops, what have you lost? This is today's reality.

But why would the FCC fine a station for running under power? I can see if they were running over or wasn't putting a grade A signal over their city of license

You have to run no less than 90% and no more than 105% authorized power, unless you have a granted temporary authority for variance due to some emergency circumstance. It's commonly referred to as an STA (Station Temporary Authority). If you have no STA, and you're not in compliance, you get fined.

I don't recall it actually happening, but in theory it could:

If "station X" is licensed for 50kw/150m, the FCC presumes it will provide service within a 52km radius. (about 35 miles) Someone else applying for a new station or to increase power at an existing station may be denied, because the new service would interfere with "X".

Now, if "X" is actually running only 6kw, its service radius will be only 34km. (about 20 miles)

So, people in town "Y" may be denied service from a new station in order to protect reception of station "X" in a place where "X" cannot actually be received.

This past week KIYS is nothing but static in Midtown where KIYS actually could be heard well when operating at 100kw. Yesterday I heard WFTA in and out of the static and no trace of KIYS. Usually you can hear KIYS some but the signal has been terrible for a long time.

Michael, I know from experience that Clear Channel stopped maitaining that and other transmitter sites a full year before selling and lma'ing those stations to eab...I also know for a fact that the KIYS x-mitter is old and in need of either replacement or at least being rebuilt. That station used to get to Memphis with a decent signal ...but that was several years ago.

Is that the same transmitter that Phil Jamison and I went to pick up in Illinois? Or was that one for the AM station - I can't seem to remember much about that trip.

Zeke, what you and ol' Phil picked up, I think, was the new KBTM-AM x-mitter. But, you know some brain cells that worked back then ain't workin' now...dr
