WFTL...... UFO-ALIEN ENCOUNTER?

Normally when one would first read the above topic the first thing that should to come to mind is "what"? Since WFTL recently has been the focus of some various different topics in South Florida, we offer this for some of you die hard alien UFO enthusiast, now keep in mind, this little ditty may or may not be of some interest but the story behind it, which pertains to WFTL, is to say the least, unique within itself....Some of you may remember this!

During the mid-70's to early 80's there was a television show hosted by none other then Lenard Nimoy, (Star-Trek fame) entitled "In Search Of" which delved into the paranormal topics such as UFO's, alien abductions, ghost, bigfoot and the like.

Sunday nights radio in South Florida during the 70's and 80's we're mostly talk shows after 10PM
every station had their own little thing going at the time and whatever topics they threw out
for the sake of talk with audience participation, WFTL no different, this particular Sunday night
WFTL's subject was about the Devil's Triangle, the host would invite the listener to call in and give his or her idea's about the Devil's Triangle, all calls we're recorded, and what happened next during that call-in period, was about as "Spooky" as it get's, thus enter Lenard Nimoy's TV show "In Search Of" an episode where WFTL studio's and the actual phone recording was utilized in filming of the TV show, which I've seen, it was alleged an alien, or entity, or something actually called in, took control of the phones and described the Devil's Triangle, it's purpose behind it and why it was there, and with that, hung-up! Now, what I saw and heard from that phone recording it was, by far unique in itself, HOAX, who knows? WFTL never said, perhaps and by far if it was a HOAX, it was the best, "In Search Of" never said either, but it sure made for good TV, local newspaper coverage and tabloid fodder, you be the judge! "Do You Believe"?

If this occured sometime in the 70s or 80s, this would have been the original WFTL on AM 1400. I find your recollection to be very interesting and entertaining as I remember the Leonard Nimoy television show you gave reference; however, you didn't convey the reason the alledged "alien" caller gave for the Devils' Triangle's existence.

Maybe I'm oblivious here....but is this any different that what George Noory is doing now? <shrug>

Let me start off by saying this happened at the original WFTL 1400 when the station was managed by Joe Amaturo. It has no connection with the current WFTL, none, zip.

It was in the late '70's I don't remember the exact year maybe '76 or '77. I know because I was there. My show followed the talk show that night. WFTL was doing a series of shows on the Bermuda Triangle. WFTL put together a team of investigators (A psychic, a reporter and others interested in the Triangle) did some talk shows and even sailed into the triangle on a ship called the Pez Espada. I don't know that they made any startling discoveries but it made for interesting listening.

The caller really didn't explain much and never said he was an alien. All he said was we all have an aura and something about the millionth council. I have no idea what was meant by any of this.

In 2001 just before 9/11 I put together a reunion of WFTL employees. Most of the attendees were from this period so we all remembered the series. It came up in conversation while we ate dinner and talked about things that had gone on at WFTL. If the call had been faked no one has ever admitted to it not even all these years later.

I'm not saying the call was real (I'm skeptical), just that I don't have any proof that it wasn't.

Thanks Mike, I was really hoping you'd weigh in on this, it was my guess that you we're working at 1400 WFTL during that particular time period.

My intentions we're not meant to say this in fact was an alien contacting WFTL on the night of the original broadcast, however, the re-enactment utilizing WFTL an the actual logger tape recordings
on the TV show "In Search Of" the voice itself was pretty spooky which lasted all of 15 or 20 seconds, a dialect that I couldn't recognize, is what made it really interesting and made for good radio and the TV show that followed.

I was hoping that you or somebody, somewhere might still have an original audio tape of this, if some aircheck factory on-line somewhere has it, I haven't found it as yet and I'm still looking, but again thanks for weighing in on this.....

I believe that it was something better than logger tapes, because we didn't use them. I'm sure the shows were recorded, but I don't know who would have them after all these years. What you heard on the TV show is exactly the way it went down.

WFTL was also the first station to carry talk shows from other cities, WIND Chicago, KOA Denver, WOR New York, WGR Buffalo, KDKA Pittsburgh, and WKRC Cincinnati. This was in preperation for WFTL's own night time talk show with John Stupak. This was way before national satellite talk shows. With the stations permission we dialed up the stations on their telephone listen line. Not great audio quality but good enough!

I'll have to find a recording I have of a Leonard Nemoy "In Search Of" show that might have that WFTL audio clip on it. I do remember my friend Roby Yonge being in part of that show, flying over a coastal stretch which he thought might be "Atlantis" down below. I believe they
also discussed the Bermuda Triangle in that episode too.

Finding Atlantis might be easier than me finding that tape though...LOL
I'll post here if I find it.

A bit off-topic, but is that the same Joe Amaturo that currently owns KJLL "92.7 Jill FM" in Orange County, CA?

Yes the very same.

In later years Neil Rogers called WFTL "The Lightbulb". A dig picking on the station's low power. All stations on 1400 are limited to 1,000 watts.
