WFUN FOXY 95.5 St. Louis updated playlist

Looks like WFUN in STL finally got a makeover. 90's Hip Hop with Upbeat R&B Hits. Sounds very good. Nicey Davis is not on the website so Im not sure if she was let go or simply decided to come off and focus on programming. Now if Radio One can fix the mess with KSOC in Dallas Ill be happy. WFUN actually sounds a bit better than KMJM which IMO is playing one of CC jukeboxes.

Why is Radio One sticking the "My" moniker on their urban adult stations and updating their format, but is totally neglecting KSOC?

Yeah only Tom Joyner, Michael Baidsen, and Al Sharpton plus the woman on Sunday morning gospel. I assuming their doing the same thing they did with WMMJ in DC. Hiring new younger dj's. As far as KSOC goes thats the OM's problem. But I guess Radio One is taking their time with the relaunch. The first was Q92.7 in Charlotte. But I guess some markets are different. Im sure this new relaunch will work for KSOUL.

In some markets they have gone more modern with the Urban AC and then later backtracked, Philadelphia comes to mind, looks like Radio One is trying different strategies depending upon the competition in each market, not a cookie cutter approach.

Your right WRNB did the same thing in Philly a few years back. I assume WDMK in Detroit will be next eventhough Urban AC is well covered by 2 other stations in that market. I doubt KMJQ in Houston will change since they pull off good numbers

If that's the case, have you seen KSOC's numbers? Not good.

It's doesn't change the fact that St. Louis urban radio has been garbage since Majic went from 107.7 to 104.9 and went completely UAC dropping hip-hop from their musical programming. We have Jacor now Clear Channel to thank for all these moves. Radio One knows they don't have try in a market like St. Louis since they by default lead with the only station that airs hip-hop in the market. St. Louis is a more young-oriented urban radio market hence why both the UACs are ranked in the teens (and not the top 5 or top 10) in the overall 12+.

St. Louis urban radio is way better than Kansas City urban radio IMO. Eventhough CC blew up KATZ for The Sound and then GenXradio. Also since their am station WESL AM was decent until the flip.

I would have to disagree with you on that one. KPRS is decent compared to any of the St. Louis segmented urban stations.

Historically, St. Louis has had several more urban stations than K.C. at any given time. KPRS and gospel KPRT have a great history and are still locally owned but St. Louis has much more urban heritage with KATZ AM and FM, KMJM and KESL and now WFUN and WHHL. The gap between the 2 markets is perhaps not as wide as it once was though.

I am somewhat surprised Clear Channel doesn't try to go back in the mainstream Urban format in STL. It should be launched on 93.7, which "The Bull" is on. Instead of trying to compete with WIL, they need to focus on 104.1. Other country outlets over the years that have tried to compete with WIL (including "The Bull") haven't done well. CC just needs to throw in the towel with that format. But at the same time, maybe the audience for Urban in STL is eroding since a lot of residents have left the St. Louis area. I don't know.

In defense of the move of Majic from 107.7 to 104.9. At the time, STL really needed a CHR badly!!!! Emmis-St. Louis was stupid (and probably just lazy) to keep a needed CHR station on the air in this market, which at the time was Q-104. The current GM felt that "there was no market for CHR in St. Louis". The stupidest thing to ever be said by a GM. Smaller markets than STL had a CHR, so why wouldn't it work in STL? My point is, the format had to land somewhere and the original Majic was a casualty. There weren't really any other stations owners (with strong frequencies) that were willing to do CHR.

I think it's a good thing CC isn't doing urban beyond Majic anymore. Most of their urban formatted station are horribly programmed. I think that CBS would be better candidate to program anything urban across the board, but they are too focused on preserving KMOX as the top biller in their St. Louis station group.

Kansas City also has Urban AC KMJK which has been on the air since 2001. Before it was K107 an Urban Oldies format that began in January 1999. Another Gospel station KGGN AM 890. It uses SGN The Light network its been around since 1996. Really not that much since Kansas City is mainly a Country and Rock music town. KCXL 1140 AM was another Urban Contempary station from 1984-1992 daytimer only. Only thing close was KCIY which was Smooth Jazz from 1995-2003. Living in KC in the 90's not that much choice for Urban music. KPRS was very limtied only playing Hip Hop after 5pm til 10pm. Once the Quiet Storm hits the air 95.7 was another choice for Hip Hop and R&B pop hits eventhough its CHR.

Just like Emmis did in Indianapolis with WNOU RadioNow93.1. Being dumped for WIBC AM simulcast. Radio One actually made a smart move for once stepping out the Urban format and bringing CHR back on 100.9

Well, nowadays KPRS is full time with hip-hop and excludes it only during the Quiet Storm nowadays.

Your right now its mostly Hip Hop. Back then it was consider a full service Urban. Blues and Jazz on sundays and live mixshows on the weekends. I guess since KCHZ went back to CHR KPRS playlist was updated. I have to say im impressed with the changes since I havent listen since 2006.

Neglected to mention a couple of other urbans in St. Louis over the years.

Urban AC KXOK-AM in the early 90s (a few airchecks on my page)
Urban AC KXOK-FM 97.1 in the late 90s (wish I had some airchecks, I remember this station fondly from the early days of internet streaming, I believe they were one of the few urbans on Mark Cuban's Audionet when it signed on).
