WFUV Starts Up Booster in Midtown Manhattan

Within the past week, WFUV 90.7 FM switched on a second booster transmitter. Running 2,500 watts from a building on 31 street, it is supposed to enhance reception in lower Manhattan, and parts of Brooklyn.
Has anyone noticed a better signal for this station? Are there still areas in New York where they are tough to receive?
In addition, 'FUV has stated they are planning to build a translator near Beacon, NY, to provide a better signal in that part of the Hudson valley.

And that's great, but why do they modulate at 70%???? They're soooo quiet!
Maybe somebody could tell us why they are constantly changing their signal. I thought it was done when they put that beast on the medical building?

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

The WFUV situation is very interesting. Is this the first time 2 on channel boosters have operated so close together?

I seems like there could be several places with strange reception.

The booster might be powerful enough that the main station could go off the air so that NYC can get better reception of 90.7

A few months ago, WFUV replaced their main antenna, at their site atop Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. They did not go into detail why this was necessary, except to indicate in their website that the old one was disappointing.
It is interesting that with nearly 50,000 watts from this site, they do not cover the area as well as the relatively low power stations transmitting from the greater height of the Empire State Building. This is evidently an illustration of elevation trumping power.

they Rip Through the stamford CT area with excellent coverage. I occasionally listen to their HD Alternative channel which will never really cut out.

I agree! While I understand relaxed or "mellow" processing for a non-comm AAA format, they do fall off the dial compared to everyone but QXR or BGO. A little more clipping would go a long way to giving them a bit better of a S/N ratio, especially on the fringes of the signal. Last I knew it was an Aphex 2020 on air. That could have changed in the past few years...

I think it's Optimod (one of the many types available). WFUV sounds very flat with no or less density. Also on there livestreams.

Yeah, sounds like an Optimod 8000A!! Hahaha, really though, they seem to have it set to almost negative processing. Granted New York is a loud market, and some stations take it too far. Q-104.3 sounds like crap, all thud and all strident high end with not a lot in between. Very rough to listen to, "warm" wouldn't describe it.

Again, if it's an Optimod 8400 or so (since they're running HD) it could stand a bit more clipping to at least get it in the ballpark of everyone else. It would still sound very clean with the levels of compression/limiting that they are using. You want to keep the TSL up by keeping things on the slower/warmer side, but they sound "weak" as it is now.

According to their website, WFUV has activated their new transmitter on Mount Beacon, near Newburgh and Beacon, NY. It will serve that area on 94.5 FM.
The update also states that while they are synching the signal of their new Downtown Booster with their main signal, the Uptown Booster has been temporarily deactivated. This is said to be temporarily impacting their signal on the Upper West side.

Well hopefully they are synchronous so it doesn't sound strange.
