WGBH and WBUR to merge

The thread title is very misleading.

There was an article in today’s Boston Globe about this.

Although the WGBH CEO has stated she is open to the idea, it’s only in the very early exploration stage.

So early that WBUR hasn’t even signaled a willingness to start the discussions.

From the article:
“In an interview Monday, WBUR chief executive Margaret Low said that while she“will always have an open mind ... there’s nothing on this front to report,” referring to a merger with GBH.

Then on Wednesday, she told the Globe in a statement that while WBUR has “no plans to merge,” she is “always open to new collaborations.”

This reminds me of the story a few years ago when the University of Washington's KUOW offered to buy Pacific Lutheran University's KPLU in Seattle. The idea was to eliminate a competitor and create a new revenue stream. That seems to be what's at play here. My take is WGBH is looking to consolidate power. Boston University has a pretty good deal with WBUR. I doubt they're anxious to sell.

What ended up happening in Seattle was the members of KPLU raised millions of dollars and outbid the university for the signal. Today, the listeners own the radio station. The WBUR membership is also pretty passionate. I'd expect them to do the same if this were to happen.
