WGBN 1150

WGBN Radio is Looking to Increass Daytime Power. Using the fact 1130 WASP is Off the Air. What about 1160 Homer City? I think the Station Next Store would be a Bigger Problem. They are less than 40 miles Apart. and Homer City is 10,000 watts?

Yep, I was surprised by that little tidbit too. WGBN had the chance to go 2500 watts day, 500 watts at night, if they put up a third tower and maintained the null towards the east. But that window went away some time ago, according to our engineer. I'm interested in knowing who did that study that apparently now says otherwise.

My guess is Tony Renda's not going to let that happen. 1160 is his blue-chip station in that market, and it does VERY WELL. I hope Loran Mann's lawyered up.

Dumb question. Does he want to move to 1130 AM ?

Whatever the case, I doubt if any of it's relevant. I'll pay attention once the CP is granted...IF it ever gets granted.

Lorran Mann was on The Radio This Morning Asking for a Min $100.00 one time Donation, For the Power Incress and HD Equipment Needed For WGBN. He Stated the cost was $45,000.00. As of 11/5/12 no Application has been made to the FCC .

WGBN broadcasting an HD signal would be one of the most pointless things in the world. ::)

Not sure about that...aren't they the flagship outlet for that Rejoice! satellite format?

Even if they were the flagship for the Pittsburgh Steelers, it wouldn't matter. No one, and I mean NO ONE
(statistically speaking), listens to AM radio in HD.

As for the upgrade, no one has mentioned the 5,000-watt problem across the state line in Cuyahoga Falls,
which is a much bigger issue than 1130 ever was.

In the South Hills I can only get a lock on one AM station and it sounds awful with all the encoding artifacts. At this point AM HD is a complete failure and a useless waste of money.

He will need a bigger transmitter, for starters. If he's still using the Continental Nelson bought back in 1985, that box is maxed out. Then the additional tower. Then the paperwork. I'd say $45,000 is a good down payment, as opposed to an all-inclusive price.

Instead of a Power Incress for 1150 , I Suggest a Swap of Freq's AM 1150 for AM 860. 860 Serves Pgh Proper 24/7. And is Already Non Com. I Know In the Past Mike Horvath Wanted to Swap 1590 for 1150 and Rev. Mann was not Interested. But 860 is a Better Signal than 1590. And as Noted In this Thread Maybe a Move to 850.

I wouldn't expect this to happen without a considerable sum of money changing hands.

I'm sure Tony Renda would love it if 1150 moved to 860. That would allow his 1160 in Homer City to run non-directional, and with a 10,000 watt signal to boot, he could finally be out from under the tower site that's been rented since 1982.

No, because that still would not allow 1160 to be non-directional at night.

WGBN is extremely unlikely to move to 860. If we're going to speculate, let's at least speculate on things that
have some basis in fact.

Just a question if 1150 moves Class D 1160 at 10KW with a "max out" the translator on a good hill or existing tower work?

Mr. Renda should Trade 1360 for 1150. Shut 1150 down and Improve 1160.

1360 is worth a lot more than 1150. He could buy 1150 and shut it down to improve 1160, but I don't think
1150 has any intention of being eliminated.
