WGBR's Chester Thompson Dies

Eastern NC radio legend Chester Thompson died this morning (Sunday) as the result of injuries received in a single vehicle traffic accident that occured August 8. Chester's weekend program, "The Chester Thompson Ol' Time Radio Jamboree" has been on WGBR Goldsboro for a decade, but his radio career dates back to 1948.

He was an original, one of a kind radio man who will no doubt be greatly missed by his many fans.

I just found out..I'm in shock..Chester was a good man and a good friend....We would talk from time to time and eat lunch every now and then and he would never let me pay...He was a true radio legend...I can't believe it....It was just a couple of weeks ago I spoke with Chester and he would always ask me to come see him...No doubt Chester is playing music in heaven..God Bless Mr. Chester and his family..I think the viewing is Wednesday evening in Goldsboro at Seymour Funeral Home..Funeral Thursday... Radio has lost a legend...

WOW! I had not heard that he was in an accident. It is a terrible shock. He was one of the last of the "OLD TIME" radio announcers. I guess we are indeed headed into a new era. I shure wish we could go back to the days when an announcer was part of the community and could draw a croud at a remote with just thier name. Heck, I just wish radio could get back to Community service, and not worry about the corp bean counters and PD's that think a format that works in North Platte will work here. Chester will be missed more than anyone can think, All his listeners will miss him as well. I hope WGBR will have a moment of silence for a voice that has been silenced before it's time.

I was at WFMC 730 in Goldsboro for a while in the later 70s. I believe Chester was the nice gentlemean who came in and did a one hour blue grass - gospel show daily at noon. He showed up to do the show and then left. Not really one of the staff members. Program was very popular. There are a few of those types of old radio folks still in the business but they are fading fast. I wish his family well during this time.

Very sad news. I had not been on this board for a while and I find two of the great ENC radio guys have left us. I don't remember if I worked with Chester at WFMC or WFTC. I think he did a Sunday show at WFTC in Kinston in my early days. Maybe it was WELS? None the less, he was a true original and he is spinning the hits in Heaven. RIP!
