WGBY Analog Signs off November 5

WGBY filed with the FCC yesterday. They want to permanently terminate the analog signal on channel 57 on 11/05/08.

I don't receive their analog signal here in southern Hartford County. I doubt I'll ever receive their digital signal either. Isn't it going to channel 22 or is that WGGB-DT which will do that?

I'm told the analog signal is already operating at half-power due to equipment failure.

And yes, WGBY-DT is moving to channel 22.

Makes good sense to me...if your equipment is dying and the switchover is six months out, do it now! Cable and satellite penetration in WMA seems sufficient to where it should not hurt WGBY...unless I missed something.

Maybe the digital transition will not take place on 2/28/09. It could become a political issue for the 20+ % of people who solely rely on OTA.
Or IS it a political issue to anyone who will be affected?

There's no maybe. There's no "political" issue. It's happening, and it's happening on 2/17/09. End of story.

...ss the promos say "BY LAW"

I just saw the mention of WGBY at 1/2 power and I remember seeing the station's analog looking pretty much the same as usual and had to run upstairs with the laptop, I'm now looking at it and it's looks the same, no, maybe a little more grainy, I dunno, hard to tell, anyhow, nice and early with still time to DX, so I will.

WGBY at 50% should only affect those within the weakest parts of their signal coverage area (down into Meriden, etc).

WGBY has a 1988 (?) vintage Comark IOT transmitter, one of the first IOT transmitters to be on the air in the US.

WGBY-DT (58) is solid state and supposidly will be rewired/configured for 22.

The shut down of 57 will allow the 57 antenna to be removed and the 22 antenna to be top mounted.

Signal into Meriden, CT? Ha! I'm two towns north of that (New Britain, CT) and rarely ever got a trace of analog channel 57 over-the-air. :(

In Hartford, I always got WGBY clear with an antenna. Now with my digital converter box, I get nothing. Goodbye WGBY, it was great watching your commercial-free programming while CPTV was playing some concert over again for the 50th time or showing women's basketball. I also enjoyed your showing the BBC World News at 6:00pm. Now, thanks to the government's "improvement", WGBY will only be a memory for us.

Or maybe there is hope. If I'm reading this correctly, I may be able to pick up DTV channel 22 when it signs on. I'll have to check their current analog but I don't think I've noticed any drop.
