WGBY channel number

A friend north of Springfield reports:

Subject: WTF WGBY?

We no longer get it on virtual channel 57 anymore; only on 22.

I don't see anything on the website about the change!

I can't think of a reason WGBY would start using their real channel number of 22 instead of 57. Granted, they didn't use 57 on air for a number of years, but why switch now to 22? Equipment problem or mistake maybe?

Paul

I suspect it was a failure in their PSIP encoder, which is what sends out the data that tells your receiver to display "57.x" when it's tuned to RF channel 22. Without PSIP, most receivers will just display the underlying RF channel.

Under the rules, WGBY has to use virtual 57, since virtual 22 belongs to WWLP.

A good way to tell is by the "subchannel"

If the subchannel shows up as "22.3" that's a sign that the PSIP generator has gone south.

(And the funny thing is, in Springfield, if you were watching over the air, you would've seen WWLP 22.1, 22.2, then WGBY 22.3, and whatever subs they have.)

That is what happened to WWDP when they were transmitting on 10.3 for six months. With an OTA antenna here in PVD, you'd see WJAR 10.1, 10.2 and WWDP 10.3 (with no actual information)
