WGCH outFOXes the competition

Last night during the Red Sox/Indians game on 1490 WGCH, during a local stopset I heard a promo for Fox and Friends. I thought no way, did WGCH switch to Fox News Radio? Well driving to work at the top of the 9:00 hour--Lisa Brady anchoring Fox News Radio's TOH cast. This means of course after about 15 years of being CNN Radio, WGCH has become the second or perhaps third CT station to hook up with FNR. Of course the first is WELI 960 New Haven--owned by Clear Channel. Wondering about WXLM FM in New London if they are FNR.

Now to compare WGCH and WELI's news departments is night and day!

WELI--As a CCU station, its news is not in studio--instead being done out of Syracuse or Providence.

WGCH--A live team led by ND Tony Savino and reporter Dima Joseph along with a team of others, including sportsman Ricky Fritch. The team produces live newscasts including the three-hour NewsCenter AM from 6:00-9:00; a half hour noon newscast, and live casts throughout the other dayparts.

But on GCH's website they still list themselves as being CNN Radio. Note to webmaster: UPDATE!

Personally, I would have thought WICC Bridgeport would join. Wonder what will become of other CNN affils like WSTC/WNLK, WLAD Danbury, The WDRC Talk of Connecticut stations, WLIS/WMRD and WICH?

WXCT AM 990 was the first station in CT that affiliated with Fox News back in 2002/2003 when Fox first started offering radio news. I was programming the station as a conservative talk station ("Exact Radio" Jan 2002-May 2004). Of course, when the station was sold in May 2004, the affiliation ended because of the change to a Spanish format. When they brought me back in Oct 2005, although I considered it, I didn't reaffiliate with Fox news when I switched the format back to talk, because of the niche I was looking to fill with Talk Radio for Women (and Smart Men). I didn't want to be deemed a political talk station; Too many people could have associated us with the Cable Network brand. So I opted for the generic IRN. And obviously, at this point WXCT isn't affiliate with a news network, but they were the first in CT to carry the Fox Radio News brand.

WDRC isn't affilated with CNN any more. They've been affiliated with AP for a while now. Other AP affilates include WATR and WICC.

Just being general here Marc. Of course I know WATR and ICC are AP affils, along with WINY Putnam. WILI Willimantic is still I think with ABC.
