WGCL-46 under fire for NETWORK PROGRAMMING SCREW UP.......

Kind of ironic when you think about it. Here we have a very well received and large audience, no doubt, watching the Tony Awards, taken away the last few minutes by a major market news station that has the lowest audience in the viewing area. ::)

Kind of funny actually, ;D

Frankly, in the digital era, I can't see why the FCC hangs on to the
rule that an analog VHF PBS station cannot swap channels with a
UHF commercial station (in other words, CBS cannot move to Channel 8
and PBS to 46 in Atlanta under the old rules).

But regardless, I wish to Heaven that CBS would unload that trainwreck
of an affiliate they have in Atlanta. Why does Peachtree TV (Channel 17)
turn it down? Or better yet, is Eric Land, the guy who turned Channel 42
in Birmingham around and took it from fourth to first in the Magic City,
available to run the place?

Hey, when the computer says you go to break, YOU GO TO BREAK. Back in the day when there were humans running master control this would not have happened. These kinds of things occur when you move 15 master controls under one roof and let PCs run everything.

ITA. What kills me is that an Aztec America affiliate for Atlanta is on Channel 4, here. How awesome would it (would've) been if it were CBS 4 - Atlanta (obviously, it would have to upgrade to a full-power signal as well) But, yeah...Channel 46, run by Merrideth Corp. is just, ALL-AROUND awful!

I'm under the impression CBS is only tolerating Meredith with WGCL because it has KPHO 5/Phoenix and handful of other Meredith-owned CBS affiliates in their roster. As a result, they don't want to see a massive exodus of affiliates all at once. However, they ought to pull their weight in Atlanta, ASAP and force this station to get its act together, ASAP!

Lighten up guys, it's only the Tony Awards and not the Super Bowl. I don't recall it beating the NBA Finals in the ratings on Sunday. The show ran beyond its regularly scheduled end time of 11pm and their automation broke away as it was programmed to do so. Sure 46 dropped the ball here but a totally automated master control cannot sense live programming running long and making that adjustment. It's a simple human programming error.

I see your point daryll. But, I think it's the Tony thing, PLUS, the station's shoddy newscasts and overall presence. CBS deserves a WELL DONE powerhouse affiliate in Atlanta. I know they lost Channel 5 but, that was like 16 years ago. And CBS as a network is million times better than it was then.

BTW: since CBS Corporation owns Channel 69 as well as several, successful radio stations here, why don't they just take over WGCL, turn it completely around?

It's no secret that local TV stations do not like their high-profit local newscasts being pre-empted or delayed.

I recall that some years ago, coverage of the championship game of the Little League World Series went past 6 P.M. EDT, and the game, which started on ABC, was shifted to ESPN (at least in the East; ABC stations on the West Coast may have stuck with it) so that local ABC stations could start their early-evening local newscasts on-time.

I also think there have been a few cases in the recent past where, if a network's live coverage of a political convention went past 11 P.M. EDT, that a few "big three" affiliates in the Eastern and Central time zones cut away to start late local news on-time.

In fact, I think many CBS affiliates would prefer that on NFL Sundays, that the network run a post-game "NFL Today" until 7:30 P.M. ET, air an extended edition of "60 Minutes" until 9 ET, and two hours of network prime-time programming after that so their late news on Sundays during the Fall always begins at 11 EDT/EST.

Local news is a Sacred Cow at most stations that do it, and most station managers wish it would Always Start On Time And Never Be Delayed.

With the Belo, buyout by Gannett, and others being rumored, Channel 46 might have new owners soon.

IMHO Meredith will buy more stations or be acquired in the next year or to.

WGCL really should be in the catbird seat at 3 PM, since that's
when it airs "Y&R" as lead-in to its 4 PM newscast. Especially
when you consider that WRAL Raleigh and WLKY Louisville run
"Y&R" at 4 and not only beat the ABC stations' 4 PM newscasts
(WTVD and WHAS, respectively) but their 5 PM ones as well. In
fact, WTVD is the only ABC o&o with a 4 PM newscast that is not
number one in its market.

Here's one I'd like to know: does "The View" on Channel 2 beat
"TPIR" at 11 AM?

WSB beats everybody else in the ratings 20 out if the 24 hours in a day. CBS Atlanta news at 4 do not have that many viewers compared to WSB. the rule here in Atlanta just to try and bet WAGA (FOX 5) and just dream to bet WSB. personally i do believe that CBS ATLANTA has a good product. they have some good people. one thhing is that they should rebrand to LOCAL 46 NEWS and get Rid of Markina Brown. Let Paul Ossman do his thing as the chief meteorologist.

I want to like WGCL, but none of us can stomach another newly created brand for this station. They need to reclaim the WGNX calls and call their news product "WGNX, CBS Atlanta 46 News". Also I have give credit to WGCL having an accredited black meteorologist considering there are only 2 in the entire market when most markets have none.

i can understand where you are going, but something need to be done, i think WGCL needs to pull a WBMG 360 flip over redo to be able to regain trust with the people here in Atlanta unless they want to remain in the basement ratings wise. SOMEBODY needs to step up and take on WSB!!!! AAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

later.

That would be a great plan reclaiming the WGNX call letters. The news product branding should simply be "CBS 46 News". No CBS Atlanta like now. When people look at the logo, they think "Eye Logo Atlanta". Yes, CBS is the Eye Network, but calling a TV station CBS (city) isn't identifiable. Just stick with CBS (broadcast number). If a CBS (broadcast number) name is already taken, call the TV station CBS (broadcast number) (city). It works in Boston, New York City, Miami, Chicago, and Denver. That is all.

This station has been re branding itself CBS 46 and CBS Atlanta every other 3 years or so it seems like. I stop watching after Jaquita left, sorry Markina.

I sometimes get http://atlanta.cbslocal.com/ and http://www.cbsatlanta.com/ confused.

IMHO: Meredith's WGCL need to keep "46"* in their brand. I wonder if it would be worth CBS's time and money to buy 46 or "swap" 46 for 69 an put a "real" O & O in Atlanta and take in 5 and 2 in local news?

* Do stations have to keep their old analog channel on the "virtual" dial. 46 (or 69) could be channel 3, 4, 6, 7, 12, or 13. Could or should WUPA re brand themselves channel 43 which is their "real" channel. For that matter "46" is really 19.

I remember asking basically the same question at the time of
the digital switchover: could WGCL brand itself as "CBS19"?
The answer I got was no, they have to continue (I suppose,
by FCC mandate) to identify themselves by their analog channel
(which is why you still have, for example, 11 Alive, even though
WXIA is on digital channel 10, and Channel 2 Action News, even
though WSB is on digital channel 39).

I've told the story before on this board: I was at a newsy event where all the local stations and networks sent crews. So at nearly the same time, crews from CBS Atlanta and CBS Atlanta both checked in at nearly the same moment. It confused the heck out of the people running that particular venue.

On the other hand, many local stations try so hard to borrow from the network branding and image and fail to actually do it. Here's one doing it and everybody wishes they'd just stop the charade. It's embarrassing.

Reclaiming WGNX would be fine. I would not mind a further regression back to the old WANX call, not for the symbolism but just because that's what the were called when I got to know them.
