WGCL-46 under fire for NETWORK PROGRAMMING SCREW UP.......

nightmanager said:
I've told the story before on this board: I was at a newsy event where all the local stations and networks sent crews. So at nearly the same time, crews from CBS Atlanta and CBS Atlanta both checked in at nearly the same moment. It confused the heck out of the people running that particular venue.

On the other hand, many local stations try so hard to borrow from the network branding and image and fail to actually do it. Here's one doing it and everybody wishes they'd just stop the charade. It's embarrassing.

Reclaiming WGNX would be fine. I would not mind a further regression back to the old WANX call, not for the symbolism but just because that's what the were called when I got to know them.

That would be a great plan reclaiming the WGNX call letters. The news product branding should simply be "CBS 46 News". No CBS Atlanta like now. When people look at the logo, they think "Eye Logo Atlanta". Yes, CBS is the Eye Network, but calling a TV station CBS (city) isn't identifiable.

Yeah, this is probably one of the contributing factors why CBS changed their domains for their radio and CBS/CW O&O TV station websites. Meredith needs to throw in the towel with their shroud this "CBS Atlanta" branding.

I always wondered when Tribune sold 46 why CBS didn't buy it, I do not recall if CBS owned 69 at the time but they could have sold 69 (Could you own two stations in the same market at that time?) or swapped it and cash for 46. Or was that when Redstone was running both Viacom and CBS and basically neglecting CBS?

It was the latter. Dupolies were allowed when the transaction occured. In addition, there were no start up cost for an already established news operation with 46. However, Redstone was like "whatever" about Atlanta although it jumped nearly 10 spots in overall market rankings during that short time surrounding this period. It is why Atlanta is the only major market that CBS owns stations on TV and radio, but lacks any major news presence outside of the V-103/WAOK news department.

This is a first and really shows CBS 46 is a non-player in Atlanta news. They actually dumped tonight's 11:00 newscast because CBS aired the movie "The Longest Yard" from 9:00-11:20. Instead an infomercial aired for 10 minutes followed by "Inside Edition."

Ironically, CBS bought WUPA 69 (then WVEU before the UPN affiliation) in October 1994. They were still an independent station. More information about this as well as the station's involvement in the great affiliation swap is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WUPA. That is all.

Could CBS Atlanta be in the process of phasing out their news department hence becoming like WECP-LD 18 in Panama City, FL? I bring WECP up because they launched just last year in 2012, and they don't have a news department. WECP replaces WTVY News 4 out of Dothan, AL, which had been the CBS affiliate for Panama City. As for WTVY News 4, they still exist, but now they can just focus on Dothan, AL.

No. Even a 4th place news in a top 10 market should generate positive cash. An in place intact news department is a selling point, if it ever come to that. Someday CBS will want an Atlanta O & O, if it stays in the O & O business. I do not know the details but IIRC even Time Warner / Turner still retained ownership of it's Atlanta OTA property when it LMA'ed it. Technically speacking according to the FCC website:

http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/t...t2=&mlat2=&slat2=&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&size=9

WGCL 46 (really 19) is one of the best facilities in the market, only being less than a meter from a being having the tallest tower and full power.

IMHO: 46's issues are content related not because of a poor signal.

Well they're bringing back local news at 4:30am again so looks like there in the news business a little bit longer. Now, with Brandon Rudat gone I don't think Better Mornings Atlanta can survive.
