WGCL Jingle history

Everyone I talk asks me, whats the real deal so here 'tis:

WGCL bought the Dallas jingle producer TM's Phase 2 shotgun sung both as "WGCL" and "G98" in 1973. In 1974 they bought the Dallas jingle producer PAMS' Energy One shotgun sung as G98 with a Gary Gears vocal tage. That cut was "G98! - Plays the Hits". In 1977 WGCL bought the Dallas jingle producer TM's The Actualizers which were cuts that sounded like another TM package, the Winning Score. They were sung in Los Angeles at Dick Hamilton's studio and the Ron Hicklin singers were the vocal group. TM would fly to L.A. to get a different vocal sound then the Dallas 7 voice group. Ron Hicklins group were the boys/girls who sang "Love American Style", 3WE's "Listen to Your City" and WKYC TV's "3 For All" music package.

In the early 80's, WGCL Program Director Bob Travis had Cleveland rock musician Jonah Koslen record a new jingle package in Cleveland's Agora recording studio. It sounded very similiar to the MTV music logo with the astronaut on the moon video when the video channel signed on. I believe the WGCL Koslen package was written and recorded first, they were recorded pretty close to each other in the same year. The lyrics were :)27 instrumental bed - "WGCL - G! - Ninety Eight! - Cleveland"). A few years later to freshen the sound Beau Coup's Dennis Lewin wrote and recorded new material with his band. Tommy and Frank Amato were the vocal group and they would go on to record many new incarnations for many years with the this logo sung as :)60+ instrumental bed - "WGCL. The Sound of Cleveland")

When Program Director C.C. Matthews came to WGCL in 1984 for the big purge, he went to JAM Creative Productions in Dallas and bought JAM's Hitradio and a composite of other WLS and KIIS packages that came to Cleveland on two big 10 inch reel to reel masters.

In 1986 Program Director Dr. Phil Locasio (not a Doctor) came to the station and bought JAM resings of Hitradio as "The All New G98".

The station went away later that summer as WNCX, The North Coast Express came along and the rest is history.

PS: Dont ask me about what the good Doctor did to the tapes!

I'd like to get ahold of clean copies of all the Beau Coup stuff. They also did a jingle package for the Sandusky Mall around '85. I guess it's really the Jonah Koslen ones I was most fond of. Always thought it was Beau Coup. I have a couple of the actual 98 studio jingle carts from the Jam era- the ones with the Looney Tunes & the "Cleveland Weather.................." wx bed.
Something I liked about the Travis era was he had the announcers cut liners that ran on other jock's shifts-like midday you'd hear Travis: "You're listening to the great 98...WGCL...(explosion)...Cleveland..." or Lee Gelette's running on other shifts. That's what I call keeping it local! ;)

WQIO/93.7 Mount Vernon also utilized many of these same jingles - including the weather bed - back in the late 80s... I presume as a tribute of sorts to WGCL.

Wasn't Kin Colebrook the GM at the time at "The All New G-98", and at WRQK, "Rock 107" in Canton? Signal One Communications?
