WGCL-WPCH Atlanta Expand Newscasts

Gray to expand Newscasts and include local news on WPCH-TV on May 9th.

Gray Television’s Atlanta duopoly of WGCL (CBS) and WPCH (independent) are increasing their local news offerings with the addition of a 7 p.m. newscast on WGCL and a 7 a.m. broadcast on WPCH. CBS46 News at 7pm debuted this week at the No. 1 spot among the local news competition, according to the station.


The newscast is anchored by Atlanta news veteran Tracye Hutchins and Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Valdez. The “Top Seven at Seven” format brings viewers up to date quickly with the top seven stories of the day.


Wake Up Atlanta on WPCH will debut Monday, May 9, and air from 7 to 9 a.m.

CBS 46 is produces 11 hours of original news programming every weekday now. Fox 5 is at 12.5 hours a day of live local programming. Never saw this coming but with the effort that Gray is putting into this market it does not surprise me. I just do not see another slot for 46 to expand into unless they go the prime time news route like 11Alive does on channel 36. LA still has more local news but Atlanta has more than NYC.
 
Not unless WGCL expands its 7 PM newscast into the 7:30 slot. There are some Gray stations that
do this, such as WAVE in Louisville and (I believe) both WCSC in Charleston, SC and WTOC in
Savannah.
 
WMBF used to have one until exchanging its 7:30 p.m. newscast for 5:30 p.m. and putting *Inside Edition* instead at 7:30 p.m.
 
CBS 46 has easily become one of my go to for news next to Channel 2. I’d wish they’d give the male anchor seat to Allen Devlin. Lots of the anchors are too stiff. They need some of Fred Blakenship’s coffee 😂.

They could easily do 10pm-11pm on Peachtree TV

I only admire Fox 5’s I-TEAM. Back in the day, i enjoyed Lisa Rayam, Amanda Davis(rip), Ken Cook, Karen Graham and Mark Hayes to name a few. Nowadays, they just don't do it for me. On another note Ron Gant grinds my gears delivering the news.

CBS 46 became likeable for me when the added Jaquita Wiilams, Sharon Reed, Markina Brown , Thomas Roberts along with Amanda Davis and Karyn Greer.

Yet, NONE of them are there now.
