WGCU-FM Hit By Lightning

Two questions immediately come to mind. Why did they leave their transmitter on the entire time? That's not legal. And, why couldn't they cobble up a tie line or Comrex link? If they don't have the equipment I am sure other stations would've helped out.

Apparently, no contingency plans...

Also, they were still streaming... so what's wrong with putting a computer at the transmitter site and streaming the audio? And since they've come back on, the audio is very harsh and distorted with essentially no processing. Not good for a mostly talk format.

My guess is no back up processing and who knows what they are using or patched together just to get back on the air. Been down this road and it's PAINFUL!

There's even a classical format on the HD-2 channel they could have run... I agree with HadYourPhil - there should have been a "Plan B" place for such a thunderstorm-laden area as Florida.

That classical format should be "in the clear" on 88.7 by June 1. That's the frequency bought by the classical group on Florida's east coast. Wonder if WGCU will abandon IBOC by then, put something else on, or keep with the classical on HD-2.

On a side note, I would be very curious to know how many HD-2 listeners they have.

Classical South Florida is an APMG property.
APMG will only allow WGCU/WMKO to air Classical 24 material that Classical South Florida declines to carry.
The HD-2 will not have classical music after the transfer is completed.

That makes sense. Wonder what they will do with the HD-2 signal. And will it generate an audience...

The only - I repeat, only - way an HD radio station will generate any listenership is if there's an FM station/translator simulcasting it. So I'd also be curious of their current audience size.
