WGHP on HD?

They never have and are not currently. WGHP launched widescreen SD newscasts on Sunday evening. WGHP is also providing selected syndicated programming in wide SD.

Please read your cited link carefully. Nowhere does it say "HD." It says "digital widescreen" which is widescreen SD.

They are the first to do widescreen news in the market, as far as I know, but I could be wrong. I am, however, 100% sure that WGHP's news is not HD, because the chief engineer told me point blank that it is not.

Not.

WDBJ Channel 7 Roanoke (RF 18) was doing 1080i HD News nearly 5 years ago. The issue is always cost. WDBJ was moving to a new facility (the old Best Buy, I think). It made sense to start fresh.

Going HD is not something most TV stations can do easily. If they think out of the box, they can pull it off. However, that means that everyone must be on board. No complaining about equipment or "that's not how it's done". As more video goes to PC-based systems, the cost drops. Who needs a $500K switcher for News when a $50K Box does it all.

It blows me away that the TV folks can't see how the Internet Video folks are eating their cake at a fraction of the cost.

WDBJ started HD news on April 22, 2008.
