WGHQ 920 AM CP to Increase Power

from the National Radio Club its reported that 920 WGHQ NY Kingston – Granted CP for U1 1000/35, corrected coordinates (41‐53‐13/73‐58‐
17).

I can remember when WGHQ was 5000 Watts back in the early 1980s. Wonder why they downgraded their listening coverage ?

Largely a cost cutting measure. They'll go from 5000W directional to 1000W non-directional. The maintenance costs of the antenna system will go way down, as will operating costs due to power consumption of the transmitter. There are many stations throughout the country that have taken similar approaches in the past few years. (WLAN in Lancaster is an example They also dropped power, including a major ). The only downside is that a station that downgrades may not have the coverage it once did; but, as long as you are covering your primary community or service area well, a lot of the lost coverage was probably over areas where a station was not selling airtime anyway.
