WGIV-FM

I didn't see this on the board but WGIV is now on 103.3FM. The coverage is spotty. They are still gospel but I have to wonder if they'll remain gospel. I can't see them competing with Praise 100.9 with an inferior signal and no advertising to let anyone know they're on the FM dial. Perhaps they could go black talk, run American Blue Network or some combination of talk/gospel/blues. I'm partial to the ABN with their southern soul/blues format. You should be able to find blues in this market.

It's W277CB a translator with 250 watts at 459 feet so technically it's not WGIV-FM. The tower is the one near Clanton and South Tryon. The translator is listed as one for WNSC-FM in Rock Hill on Radio-Locator.com. Guess they didn't pick up the change from the FCC database.

Speaking of WGIV-FM wasn't 101.9 WGIV-FM for awhile or am I mistaken? I do know that when I first got here 101.9 was WZXI and later Kiss 102 WKSZ or something like that.

The Charlotte radio market has changed alot since I've been here!

Mike,

The FCC website's "call sign history" for WBAV only goes back to 1988 and at that time it was WCKZ (for Kiss 102). Then Feb, 1994 shows a call sign change to WBAV, then one month later to WBAV-FM. Now, I have a 1995 M Street Directory which shows AM 1600 as WBAV; and the FM (101.9) as WBAV-FM which was listed by the FCC in my previous sentence. In the back of the 1995 M Street Directory, there's section for call sign history. It's lists WGIV as formerly being WBAV. But it doesn't specify frequency, so it could be AM 1600 or 101.9. It also lists ONLY the previous call sign; not a complete history. Would have been nice if M Street would have made the distinction like "(FM)" for those FMs that didn't have "-FM" in its call sign.

Eric

Thanks Eric, I knew that 1600 and 101.9 had the same call letters for awhile but WGIV-FM didn't sound right. I forgot that 1600 was WBAV.

It hasn't been mentioned but WGIV 1370 has a pretty good signal around here. I don't know how far it goes though.

Yeah, I've mentioned before, WGIV/1370 and WBT are the only Charlotte AMs I recieve clearly here in Indian Land (Fort Mill) SC. I just tried 103.3 on several of my radios and I do get "WGIV-FM" but very poorly--not listenable. I think there is a lot of bleed in from WSOC-FM which seems to be an ongoing problem here, all across the dial. Of course, we know WNSC never intended to broadcast on 103.3, they probably didn't even know it had been applied for. Still I wish WGIV the best since they seem to be a true independent, local broadcaster, and they're keeping the heritage calls alive...

(((WCKZ "KISS 102"))) In the late 80s WLIT became WCKZ "Kiss 102", a churban station similar in style to what is known today as Rhythmic CHR.[citation needed] The current name and format were adopted in 1994

Wow...I forgot about "WLIT" -- that was right after "WZXI", correct? Did 101.9 WLIT play Beautiful Music or Lite AC?

As WLIT, They played Transtar's "Format 41", a mix that ran from Mantovani to Nat King Cole to The Carpenters.

If memory serves, Jon Robinson was doing Morning Drive, and the remainder of the day was Transtar.

Later . . . .

I wrote most of the history section of the Wikipedia article, and I'm sure a lot of what I said was in the Charlotte Observer, though that would require microfilm to verify.

WZXI was soft AC prior to 1983. They were WGNC-FM at one point.

WEZC (now K-104.7) went soft AC and upset a LOT of people. So WZXI switched to beautiful music in January.

They were still beautiful music when they changed to WLIT. But they were more lively.

Then came Format 41 in 1986. Which did not include Mantovani, but did have Sinatra and Perry Como. Well, their newer songs.

They evolved further toward AC before becoming Kiss 102.

When they did that, the call letters got parked in Myrtle Beach (I noticed a topic about parking) until a station in Chicago go them. That same station ended up being WBIG when the station with those letters changed. Then another station was WBIG.
