WGKA Traffic Reports

OK, I made a reference about this and I WAS HEARD (or read, to be more accurate)!I wrote on this board that if WGKA could fix their afternoon traffic reporters they may have something on WSB. They now have somebody named Heidi Roo (Rue?) and, while I've heard a few on-air stumbles, the content is far and away better than the WSB i'llspeedrightthroughthereportsonobodycanunderstandwhati'msaying stuff. WGKA also seems to sound clearer. Have they raised their power or relocated their antenna? I'd be interested to see if anybody knows about this.Anyway, I'd watch out WSB...somebody is after your behind and my guess is, they are not done with programming changes. Who knows, maybe their owners (Salem, I think...) are ready to play some hardball. If that's the case, it's about time! ;D ;D

Every time I tried to listen to SB's traffic reports I always felt like I had to make a bid.....sounded more like an auction. Oh, that's right! Cox, in addition to the main newspaper and the news powerhouses (TV and AM) in town, they also own Manheim (sp) Auctions. So, I guess Captain Herb and Jason Durden moonlight as Manheim's auctioneers! Sneeky.

With Captain Herb having to carry the dead weight of Calandra Corder and Nancy Plum in the afternoons, I'm surprised somebody hasn't come up with a more viable traffic reporting alternative to WSB. They need to make Arum work the split shift, which would be a good thing in the afternoons, because with it being radio only, we wouldn't have to see him. But listening to WSB in the afternoons means you have to endure Sean Crappity, whose head probably smells something like Rush Limbaugh's rear end.

Outside of Herb & Arum, I seriously think WSB's traffic department is lacking. Angie was very good, but she's in Birmingham now, and for some reason Herb doesn't use Jason Durden like he used to. They need to get some new strong traffic talent. As for GKA, it's Monroe and that's it. Their info is lacking.

Not to mention that both Herb and Arum have to pull double-duty every morning (except legal holidays) reporting traffic for both "Atlanta Morning News" (WSB Radio) & its television counterpart, Channel 2's "Action News AM".

The traffic players are Metro Networks' Shadow Traffic, Clear Channel's Total Traffic (heard mostly on Clear Channel stations), Traffic.com (they operate road sensors for DOTs and do traffic reporting on the side) and GA DOT (in Georgia). Apparently, Salem uses GA DOT. On all-syndicated or automated stations like WGKA, the reports are often recorded and uploaded. To cram as much in as possible and to fit the time slot exactly, the smaller traffic providers often edit out silences, pauses and breathing spaces (either manually or using Adobe Audition's "delete silence" feature). So you get everything running together.

And those doesn't even touch on the question of whether pre-recorded traffic reports are at all useful, given how volatile traffic conditions are.

Jason Durden's primary duty is traffic reports for WSB-FM (B98.5). His chopper also has the camera that WSB-TV uses to show traffic problems (Jason's chopper is seprate from News Chopper 2)

Paula Phillips does traffic for 97.1 The River, which I suspect is Metro Traffic (who does WSB-AM/TV traffic reports during non-peak hours, as well as traffic for WABE, Dave FM, V103, and WXIA-TV. Metro Traffic is owned by CBS, so you can count the ironies.) I believe Kiss also uses Metro.

I do not know who does traffic for the Radio One stations, if any.

While on the topic - 95.5 The Beat has never broadcast traffic reports. Does anyone know why?

Radio One also uses Metro. I have no idea as to why the Beat doesn't air traffic reports
