WGKA/WCFO/WFOM Changes - Worth It?

With the lineup changes coming to WCFO, WGKA, and Marietta's WFOM, will many people (outside of this board - and those who listen to talk radio) notice the changes at the three hashmark rated talk stations. No.

Why...there is only one station that is viable with talk, and that is one with a three-letter call sign attached to it (WSB-AM).

The question should be asked why anyone is bothering to compete with WSB. WGST was viable in the 80's because WSB-AM was still pumping out music from its 50,000 watt transmitter. When WSB stopped playing music in 1991 and went all news/talk, that didn't initially work. But when WSB copied what WGST did (and signed Boortz and Clark Howard), there was no mistaking who would be king.

Unless someone can snag Boortz and Clark Howard from WSB-AM, or pull off a miracle and get a clear channel signal, it sounds like they shouldn't even bother.

The only time I listen to SB is for Boortz.. I hate the morning show.. 15 minute turn over is far to repetitive. For the most part, I listen to WGKA. Sometimes I listen to Phil Valentine on WFOM.. So.. to answer your question. no, they won't compete with WSB.. but at least there are options to listen to something else. So.. yeah its worth it to me.

More interesting question is do the 2nd tier AMs make money? If 'Tier 2' national talent is completely paid by the syndicator, seems like 10 local units/hour @ $100 probably pays the bills. Not a bad model.

Back in the 90s, WPLO and WGUN were pretty successful at this. Dont try to be something you're not.

Salem needs an Atlanta affiliate for their talk network in order to get higher rates from advertisers. So you can expect WGKA to stay. WGKA does show up in the book although with a .7 or .5...something like that.
