WGKC

WUIL-FM (UROCK 107.9) is probably the closest you'll find to classic rock here at this point. With GKC gone, I'm thinking they'll be moving up in the books. Next closest is my Alternative station, but that's a stretch. Our "older" stuff isn't quite that old ;)

I'm interested to see how WGKC is going to do going up against the well-established WIXY-FM (second highest rated station in the market according to Eastlan). Seems to be kind of a bold move.

I used to respect Stevie Jay when he did the morning show on WDWS. A highly talented broadcaster and a great one to do the mornings.

However, his business dealings with SJ Broadcasting have turned his reputation into a downward slide. From the day he started Connect FM, it was obvious that it would not last more than a year. Scheduling women six hours a day to compete with Jim Turpin and Rush Limbaugh on DWS did not capture the ratings. Sure enough, they're doing ESPN full time other than the mornings and afternoons now. WJBC in Bloomington has all-local, but that's because they've carried the all-local talk format for several years now.

He tried to make it good with grabbing the Cardinals way from WDWS. DWS has aired Cards games longer than KMOX in St. Louis has. Great move for the evenings, when DWS is not listenable outside of C-U. Then, DWS picked up the Cubs the next year. He snatched them right up and put them on GKC. I do not know if they will remain on GKC for 2013. However, I listen to the Cubs on WGN 720 out of Chicago, anyway.

The one good thing he has going his way is Q 96, the longtime top-rated station in the market. A lot of people don't realize that SJ owns Q 96, since he's blown up all the other stations he owns.

Back in the 90's, we always joked about "Country and Cubs" on 97.5.

What does Stevie own these days?

WSJK-FM 93.5 "ESPN Radio" has Stevie Jay in morning, Lon Tay & Jeremy Werner in afternoons, also St. Louis Cardinals
WJEK-FM 95.3 "Sunny 95.3" airs a simulcast of Stevie Jay, airs a similar format to WHMS, also Chicago Cubs
WQQB-FM 96.1 "Q 96" is Top 40/CHR format (also known as "boring music" to me). #1 in the market.
WGKC-FM 105.9 "US 105.9" airs a country format, is also one of the better formats SJ has put on a station
