WGLD-AM 1440 York's new Phillies home

according to the York Daily Record, Cumulus Media announced WGLD will be on the air before the Phillies opener on March 31, and that WGLD will carry the entire schedule of Phillies games in 2008. Great to have the Phillies and 1440am both back in York County!!!
 
According to the FCC database, the station will operate with a super low power of 53 watts at night, so if you live more than a few miles from the tower, don't expect to hear much of the Phillies at night.
 
The original 1440 signal from Red Lion,when it was a religious format (WGCB),was quite good for the
frequency and power ! I would often DX them while driving through Towson,MD.
The technical quality of their programs however,hum,one channel attenuated,etc,left a lot to be desired.

I heard WGLD on the air last night doing a continual loop of Phillies and Revolution highlights (plugging sister station WSBA). As I was driving north on I-83, the signal totally faded out about 5 miles north of the transmitter location.

Also, the beginnings of the ESPN-1440AM web site are now up at www.wgld.com or www.espn1440.com.
 
Oops! The web sites www.wgld.com and espn1440.com have had the big ESPN-1440 logo taken off. They are now a blank white screen with the Cumulus York logo saying "Web site coming soon."

If you listen to the baseball loop long enough, you will here them say that a major sports network is coming to 1440 in May.

So what does that mean in the interim between their promoted 3/31 sign-on and the switchover to the new network in May? WSBA simulcast being preempted by Phillies games?

Yes, the night time signal for this station is horrible.....going east, it disappeared into the hash within 4 miles of the transmitter site. Also, I could clearly SEE the WSBA towers and it was being beat up by interference! This couldn't have been more than 2 or 3 miles away from the tower site. The daytime signal is OK, but not great, but at night, this place is a JOKE! I'm sure their phone will ring off the hook with complaints from Phillies fans about the night games.

When this was WGCB in Red Lion, it was run as a daytime only station. Now I can see why.

Since much of sports is played at night....how can they believe this signal will be practical for servicing the Phillies fans?
 
FYI- Phillies Baseball- Saturday Afternoon. Daytime signal, Excellent and strong, interference free from New Freedom to Hunt Valley,Maryland,along I-83. Fading began from Timonium to Towson where signal deteriorated.

I heard 1440 on Saturday too, heading south to Baltimore. Good, listenable signal to the Mason-Dixon line and a few miles beyond. It wasn't coming in that well by the time I got to Hunt Valley, though, so your radio must be more sensitive than mine. To the east it drops considerably when you cross the Susquehanna, but gets to Wrightsville at least. I don't know about the signal north and west.

I live within a mile or so of the transmitter site, which I can actually see from my home. On a GE SuperRadio, with the nighttime power, it's there and listenable but is a little flippy and I can easily null it out. At the Galleria Mall, about 5 miles to the east, it's fairly good on a car radio, more listenable than not, but again it's subject to interference. How well it comes in on an ordinary table radio is a good question.

15 to 20 miles with 750 watts isn't bad for daytime. Two or three miles, max of 5, on 53 watts is about all anyone can reasonably expect at 1440. I commend them for resurrecting a dead AM and trying to do something with it, even with its limitations. Not all Phillies fans will be happy, but it is what it is.
 
What other programming is coming to the station and when? Great having the Phillies on but the 2007 highlights are getting old.
 
hey riptide, to partially answer your question, until May, they are simulcasting WSOX again. heard it this morning.
 
i spoke to soon. saturday morning, they were doing the Phillies loop again.
 
Heard from a local newspaper guy that cumulus and espn worked a deal to pull the four letter network off 1600 wpdc and put it on the cumulus property in the market (wgld).

I can't get 1440 where I live...anyone know what they're broadcasting now?

1600 has sporting news radio now. does this mean 1350 woyk is also gone over to sporting news? Anyone, anyone?
 
1350 is still ESPN but goes to the Mike O'Meara Show (WJFK in D.C. and the former Don & Mike Show) from 3-7. They also have O's baseball.
 
woyk am 1350 starts sporting news monday 5-5 and keeps the Orioles and local sporting events as usual. Good luck listening to the Phillies on a 1ooo watt station in the am and who knows if 500 in the evening. Your better off getting sattelite if you want to hear the Phils than rely on 1440 in my opinion.
 
???What a mess. This is my first post on this board. I moved from Noo Yawk to York about 20 months ago after retiring from over 35 years in the broadcasting industry selling national and local radio on a very high level. Central Pa. radio has some solid talent considering the size of the combined Lancaster/Harrisburg/York/Lebanon area.
The switch of ESPN Radio from WOYK to WGLD is almost funny, however, when you factor in the miserable signal of WGLD it is an abomination! WOYK is clearly the loser with Sporting News Radio which is in my humble opinion an inferior product to ESPN by a wide margin. WOYK has been a low rated station for a number of years with a ton of PI advertising filling in the void of low local spot sales. The addition of the Orioles was a plus once WBAL was out of the picture (I will not comment about WSBA at this time). The Phillies end up on a station that has enough power at night to light up a couple of 100 watt light bulbs.
Predictions-the daytime audience of WOYK will sink even lower. The Phillies will be a disaster on WGLD because the majority of games are at night and the signal is whispering in the wind and nobody can hear it!
The end result.....there are no winners....only losers///the radio listening audience in Central Pa.

Again, why ESPN would align with an inferior daytime single signal is anyone's guess. The 1400 signal would
fill in much of the void formerly covered by 1350.
 
I too am mystified by the ESPN switch to a lower power station.Undoubtedly 5 kilowatts is certainly far superior to WGLD's signal ! In fact WOYK's daytime signal is quite impressive.
However,WGLD's so called 750 watts, is the strongest 750 Watts that I have ever heard.
In the New Freedom area, the signal is excellent, whether home or in the car and remains quite good or
satisfactory all the way down I83 to Hunt Valley Maryland, listening on my 1980 Pontiac Delco radio.
Could be a good ground system coupled with a new solid state rig. Or perhaps they tied one of their radials to a southbound rail track.( Old Engineers' trick.) Just kidding of course !

We've talked about this a million times... A void? How much of a sports void is there in Harrisburg? I totally agree that the Touch on the FM could be a winner, but does Harrisburg need another sports station? ESPN content is everywhere (and aside from M & M and the Herd, the radio side isn't that good), and while FSR isn't the greatest either, people aren't listening for quality. They listen for content...scores, in game updates, and the like. And now, with Patrick and Rome getting the at work sports fan, aside from Mike and Mike, when else would you listen to ESPN? The Herd is great, but I'll take Patrick and Rome in that block any time.
