anyone have any update on the status of AM 1440. the request for change of licensed city has been in front of the FCC for a while now.

the FCC granted the change of license last week to Manchester Township as a CP(construction permit). any info as to when it will start broadcasting from there and what type of format it will have?

Look for WGLD calls to move back to Indy where they came from. Cumulus talk format on
93.9 there failed miserably and the station is on Xmas track. As for 1440, RadioDisney
ought to be brokered - powerful for the daytime and who cares about the 10W nighttime?

Considering the current AM formats, and given the limited power for 1440 (1000w / 10w) and its new signal location (one mile beyond the city), I'd bet a nickel Cumulus will launch a Business Talk format.

It's either oldies or Hispanic. Nobody is doing 50s to early 60s. No British invasion stuff. Some would tune in to hear it. Hispanic would work well in York. Business news or any talk will get a 0.NOTHING... and is NOT easy to sell, contrary to the optimism these biz stations are started with. Bottom-line: this is a one-share, or less, radio station at best.

spoke with a person in the know at WSBA, and he said that 1440 would be geared toward the 35-54 demographic. this will limit the formats available. any updated suggestions.

Classic Metal! "1440, The Blade... York's Classic Metal." 8)

The construction permit has been granted for WGLD, when all is said and done, it will be 730 day/53 nite, licensed to Manchester Township using one of the towers in the WSBA system.

Possibilities for 1440:
1) Oldies: Won't do it. Even if with an older playlist, conflicts with WSOX.
2) Classic Country: Already one in the market, WHVR.
3) Any form of News-Talk-Competes with Co-Owned WSBA.
4) Any form of sports: Already in the market with 5 KW-WOYK.
5) Adult Standards-Would pull a loyal, but too old audience to generate much revenue.

Likeliest possibility, IMHO:
1) Adult R & B, as in 1400 The Touch, Harrisburg. Check Radio Locator, 1440 covers York City, with a considerable Black population, 24/7, even with 53 watts at night. Its a totally un-served audience and could generate a steady 2 or 3 shares of 35-54. Doesn't pull audience away from any other station in the York Cumulus cluster.

Other Possibility:

Return to the old WGCB format, Preach, Pray & Pay 24 Hours A Day. Hire some low-wage kid to run the board/program the computer. A pure cash-generating machine in a conservative area that would surely support such a station.

Compete with The Touch and WHYL? How can you compete where you cannot be heard? Last I looked neither WHYL, WLAN-AM, or WTCY are players at all in York. 5kw @ 1460 (WTKT) with IBOC may be an obstacle that less than 1000-watts may find tough to get by. Let's face it, WGLD is a go-nowhere limited AM facility. Put oldies on it and attract what you can.

i did a yahoo search under "wgld-am" and one of the links is to the Dan Patrick radio show. going into the site, they are listing WGLD as one of their affiliates. does this mean an all-sports format for 1440. if so, what happens to 1350-WOYK. possibly there is a bigger deal here than we know about. i wouldn't be suprised to see things happen by Jan. 1.

Let's hope the equipment for WGLD is better than what was there when it was WTHM. When I visited there with WVCH's GM to try and fix some problems, all I found was a mess.....

Not a lot will happen to WOYK. The station has a much better signal and those guys have worked hard at earning a living for years. The folks at the WGLD cluster will be excited at first, then sales will pass over it for a buy on any of the other stations at the blink of an eye. Most sales people are afraid to ask for the few extra bucks to add it on.

An OLDIES format on 1440 CERTAINLY wouldn't compete with WSOX, they are hardly an 'oldies' station anymore. I guess all the brains behind these operations have forgotten about the people who listened to the 50's and 60's and even into the 70's! Lets face it, we just don't count anymore.

Dave is right on. In fact, I'd kick it off with NO British invasion stuff at first. Go for the upper-baby boomer initially... then stick with a true traditional oldies list.
