WGLS-FM 89.7 adds RDS

New surprise to see WGLS broadcasting RDS finally. No song info yet, just calls and "Rowan Radio"

Nice to see. Swear we had RDS at "Rowan Radio" back in the late '90s, but was turned off at some point in the early 2000's.

Licensing costs?

If GLS eventually adds song info, those listening on those old-fashioned "radio" thingys will achieve parity with web listeners. As car dashboard entertainment systems become more logo-oriented, GLS will have to consider adding HD.

I was disappointed to see GLS's stream access is locked to its website - I couldn't plug it in to my media player. I guess that helps control costs. Haven't tried to see how easy the access is on a phone. I noticed on the website that there is a dial-up access to the GLS stream. How much use does that get?

if you can delve into the background flash/html code, you can usually find the direct url for a stream

rds seems to have fallen out of favor when it didn't quite catch on in the late 90s/early 2000s.. but thanks to the high tech radios of todays vehicles, its picked back up.

nice to see WGLS catching up with a lot of the rest of the radio world.

I found the stream URL, but it must have permissions attached, because it wouldn't load in the player.

private message me with it, JBRaddock.. im not IT Genius, but if I can toodle around with it, maybe I can figure it out

I usually stream right through TuneIn on my Amazon Echo.

I did see the TuneIn page. Didn't pursue it at the time as I would have had to open up some of my browser script restrictions to get the page to operate. That's probably the way to go to put it in an external player though. Thanks.

I can tell you since I work there that Rowan's IT dept has the stream firewalled I think. They really are strict with the stream. They top it off at 50 listeners.

yeah haha! i host the vinyl frontier sunday nights 9p-12a. i play a lot of AOR stuff from vinyl and new indie music like connan mockasin etc..
