WGMD Host Fired via Facebook?!

Wow! But something about this story sounds strange. Moved from weekdays to weekends by e-mail? Then totally dropped the same way?

It would appear, the PD doesn't have very good management skills. I gather this Sussex county "angel" is a Lib Democrat, and probably her show didn't fit the format for the rest of the station's format. But even so, she deserved a face to face, same with the move from weeknights to weekends. However, there might be more to the story than we know.

As Sussex is a pretty Red County, maybe WGMD was having a difficult time selling her show possibly very Blue show to those Red advertisers. Unlike WILM, WGMD seems to have no problems getting plenty of local spots during Rush's show. So it could be the opposite problem down there from what WILM faces in Blue NCC.

Anyone here from Lower Del who might know more of the situation down there. It does seem strange.

Angel is not a "Liberal", she had a show similar to other programming on the station. Dan Gaffney IS THE RADIO STATION, so other hosts must fit his desire.

Thanks for the clarification on Angel. Small town radio station PD, big fish in very small pond. Of course he hopes to move to a bigger pond (market) someday. Sounds like he has a lot to learn in how to treat his employees. My guess is, Sussex County Angel will become some other county Angel at another station in another market.

Different situation, Mike...

I've heard Mr. Gaffney has an ownership stake in WGMD.

Even as the owner of the radio station, he sure appears to be a low class act in how he handled this layoff. Just because you're the owner doesn't give you the right to mistreat your employees. Now in fairness to Mr. Gaffney, we've only heard one side of the story, but on the surface it appears, for whatever his reason for letting her go, he should have had more integrity and had a face to face. Any employee deserves that. Let's put the shoe on the other foot, he'd surly not appreciate it if one of his employees sent him a Facebook note saying I quit. Respect in the work place is a two way street.

I used to work at WGMD (1997-1998). Most unusual station I ever worked at in my 42 year career. I hope that they have upgraded their equipment since I left ... it was a microscopic notch above college radio back then.

Not to defend that station because they are a bit different than others you will see, but that may have been the only way he could get a hold of her. Yeah a phone call probably would be best, but he is a busy PD who hosts his own talk show each morning. Plus I think he has six kids. WGMD is the only station on Delmarva that seems to making any money now a days.
