AllAccess is reporting that Geos Communications is selling WGMF-FM (Gem 107.7) to Family Life Ministries, and they will take over the station in a LMA on July 11th.

I really hope all of the translators aren't going with it. ::)

With all the other discussion regarding the unfair advantages given to 'public' broadcasters, it would seem that broadcasting religion should be giving one the ultimate unfair advantage.

;D

Hallaluigh this will make for great listening I hope they stream

From Taylor's On Radio-Info.com :

Scranton’s “Gem FM” is sold to Family Life Ministries, in a deal worth $1 million to seller Geos Communications. WGMF-FM is a Class A at 107.7 licensed to Dallas, Pennsylvania. Its oldies format, known as “Gem”, has been simulcast on Geos sister WGMF (1460) licensed to Tunkhannock. Only the FM is being sold in this transfer to Family Life Ministries, which already owns contemporary Christian WCIG, Carbondale at 91.3. That station runs the Family Life network feed, and it (or something else religious) will replace the oldies when the LMA begins July 11.

Having Been There When 107.7 Went On The Air, This Breaks My Heart.

Being There While 107.7 Is On The Air Now, This Breaks My Heart. ???

But wait Sharkey...don't spend that severence check yet.....

GEOS retains all of it's translators and WGMF-AM (formerly WEMR) and the Gem format continues as usual on all those. Only the 107.7 signal goes away.

We're still gonna be here!

The word for the week is "CAKE AND EAT IT TOO" You all have put AM's down for a while...we'll see how 1460 holds its own?

How does this affect 95.3fm and Alan Waterhouse's excellent programming on sunday evening?

Except the fact that in Wilkes-Barre you should now turn to 104.5 (this freq has been on the air for about 6 months now) it doesn't affect Allan at all....Sinatra and Friends is one of our most popular shows and it continues.

As a matter of fact, EVERYTHING continues....except listening to Gem on 107.7.....we'll be called Gem 104 instead.

Thanks for the kind comments about Allan...Sinatra music is his passion, and he loves hearing from people who love the show. If you want to write to him his email address is [email protected]

By the way, our email addresses will be changing to "gem104" in the near future, in case anyone wants to write or make a note of it.

Ben

Station off air from late Friday until midnight sat.....severe Tstorm...maybe even an F1 tornado in Tunkhannock Township....over 50 trees down near the 1460 building and towers. much damage in the area....and Penelec on strike!!! The managers and a contractor for Penelec reportly got the power back on.

Thanks for the info, Kevin. I am receiving it once again, although it is not very strong in the Hanover Twp. area. The 107.7 signal is stronger.

Ben, since your FM translators will be retransmitting WEMR (new WGMF) will the FM's be in mono?

And it's official...from the Family Life Network website:

New Radio Station

09.10.09 |

Family Life Network has expanded its radio broadcast with the purchase of WCIG 107.7 FM in Scranton, PA. The station reaches a potential listenership of 450,000 people in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, and is currently FLN's largest radio station in terms of listenership.

Over the next several months, we plan to extend the reach of WCIG in the Greater Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market, so more people can experience a message of hope that impacts their lives.

We praise God, and thank our many listeners and supporters, for helping us reach more people with the Gospel of Christ.

Great, now they're going to scoff up translators and put more wasteland on the FM dial.

Family Life will probably not use translators to extend the reach of 107.7, but probably do it this way: the city of license was changed to Dallas for a very good reason. The transmitter site did not change when the city of license did, but by changing to Dallas Family Life can now file an application to change tower location and go directional and/or use contour protection (mountains in the way) to protect 107.9 WKRF/107.7 WGTY. In all likelyhood WCIG may move much closer to Wilkes-Barre (maybe the same site as WSJR?) since they no longer have to serve Tunkhannock with a city-grade signal. If I'm correct you cannot specify a new COL using a directional antenna, so instead, you find a new city of license that is served by your current city-grade signal (Dallas and Tunhannock are currently both served by WCIG's city grade signal), then when it is approved, you file to move your tower going directional or using contour protection.

Indeed! WCIG filed to move August 13th and will use a directional antenna.

Station's 60dbu (1 millivolt per meter) coverage map is here:

I'm guessing this will be a superior signal to WILK-FM and WDMT as you not only get W-B/SCR but also the Back Mountain area (with 70dbu), and possibly good coverage approaching Clarks Summit and Tunkhannock.

For comparison: WILK-FM 60dbu contour:
