WGN America to NewsNation

WGN began airing a News show called NewsNation Prime in 2020 then changed the name of WGN America (Previously WGN Superstation) in 2021 to NewsNation adding more News programming over the last few years.

Even though this article talks about Nexstar losing money at The CW but still think they can make the network profitable they did mention Newsnation at the end of the article which Nexstar also owns.

Starting June 1st, 2024, NewsNation will begin airing News 24/7 and will no longer be airing its only syndicated series left on the network which is Blue Bloods which is only on weekends right now from 4pm-7pm E/3pm - 6pm C.

Also Nexstar will be airing Crime Nation on Saturdays at 10pm E/9pm C, a show that aired from February to April of this year on The CW which featured Ashleigh Banfeild and Brian Entin.

But the re-runs get better numbers than the news programming. I don’t buy that nexstar is actually making a lot of money off newsnation - with the whole, “nexstar gets to keep all the revenue.” NN is in trouble and nexstar knows it

Nobody knows it exists.

I assume it's still in my cable package. I get the broadcast channels, one local news channel, public access and seems like there's one more.

I used to watch the occasional movie on WGN America and then I just forgot about it.

Yes and also the nexstar owned local TV Stations have more viewers than even News Nation. I mean stations like WGN, KTLA, WPIX, KRON, KSWB/KUSI, KTXL, KDVR/KWGN have more viewers than News Nation.

After they took over The CW and cancelled all those shows and have Sports and reality shows and this past year they mentioned that The CW lost 50 million dollars. They still say the CW will be profitable by 2025 but The CW will probably be more forgettable by 2025.

I don’t get frustrated by a lot of things in life. But, as a former employee, their constant, “just trust me bro, this will work” while knowingly sinking used to agitate the hell out of me

I think nexstar is prepping for a sale. They know they can’t keep this going much longer. Hell, even the FCC finally is making them clean up that side car crap that no one wanted to stop before

On the contrary, Nexstar doesn't have to pay anything for syndicated programs, the overhead is far less as a cheap news channel with has-been talent, and they can still extort cable companies for retrans revenue (for at least the next few years as that business model slowly implodes).

NewsNation turns a profit with little effort.

Nexstar stations are already being asked to slash profits. My former station has to cut $200,000 worth of expenses. the model is imploding now. 2025 will be an interesting year

It has nothing to do with NewsNation and everything to do with a liner television business model that is on borrowed time, coupled with Perry Sook's foolish refusal to consider streaming as a worthy investment.

Nexstar Broadcast Group is the Blockbuster Video of television broadcasting. And where's Blockbuster Video today?

Here is Perry Sook's response.
Perry Sook isn't the great businessman he wants everyone to think he is. He's a mediocre small-market small-minded owner that got lucky buying up the competition when interest rates were near zero, and he still acts that way burying his head in the sand when confronted with the future.
