WGN America

Now that Time Warner cable has added this channel to their lineup in New York City. Are there areas in the United states or cable system that don't have this channel?

Here in L.A., my Time Warner system (formerly Adelphia, City of Los Angeles lineup) does not carry, nor ever has carried (to the best of my knowledge) WGN America. But my parents' Time Warner system (formerly Comcast, Hollywood-Westchester lineup) does carry that channel, in both analog and digital on channel 25, and in HD on channel 458. I'm not 100% sure on whether Time Warner's "legacy" systems (the ones that weren't acquired from Adelphia or Comcast, such as Torrance or the West San Fernando Valley) carry WGN America.

Technically, New York City's boroughs that are served by Verizon FiOS have had the channel.

Additionally, the Co-Op City section of the Bronx, many years ago (not sure if it exists today) had a cable system different from Cablevision, and on its lineup was WGN back in the "superstation" glory days. I actually saw a basketball game with Michael Jordan in it, live, on WGN (Channel 9).

Now, WSBK - there's a "superstation" that I miss... Channel 20 on the Bronx Cablevision lineup - also carrying WVIA in Scranton at the time, too... I might sound crazy, but I'd pay the high bill being footed for my current lineup, just to get all of the channels from back in the day that either no longer exist in their prior form, or are no longer available in my area. (And I'd subscribe to NFL Network a la carte. ::) )

Channel 180 for AT&T U-Verse in the Hartford area. The Comcast line-up for New Britain, CT doesn't carry it, so Hartford is quite likely in the same boat.

Of all places, WGN America is not carried on cable systems in the Chicago area. However, WGN America is available in Chicago via Direct TV and Dish Network.

Most Chicago viewers instead receive the local, over-the-air version of Channel 9 WGN-TV. My understanding is that most of the programming is different on the two versions, except for sporting events (White Sox, Cubs, and some Bulls games) and 12:00 Noon and 9:00 PM Central newscasts, which are simulcast on both. Blackhawks are carried just on the local WGN-TV.

Also, I've seen local public affairs programming (e.g. "Chicago's Very Own" and "Charlando") being listed on WGN America listings, so I believe those would qualify, as well.

WGN America has been on Comcast Cable in Northern California for about 5 years. When I want to feel lucky for living in the California climate during the winter, I put on their 9:00 News (at 7:00, here) and watch their weather report. ;D

The legacy TWC systems in South Bay (Hawthorne, Gardena, Lawndale) added WGN in 2001; it was added to the Torrance system a year or so later, and I believe the West SFV system had it even before then. The SoCal cable systems (even back it was more splintered, with different companies like Century, Continental, United Artists, Jones Intercable, Paragon) would carry either WGN or WWOR in lieu of the other, but there a small handful of systems that carried both superstations. There were many that replace WWOR with WGN when WWOR stopped distribution of its national feed.

WWOR's position on the satellite transponder eventually made way for Animal Planet.

By the way, how soon until "Animal Planet" drops the "Planet" from its name? ::)

They're refusing to add it. I emailed them last year or the year before. They said they're concentrating on converting all their systems to digital than adding new channels. Just another reason why Comcast Sucks. COX has carried it in Connecticut on Digital Channel 82 for well over a year now.

I thought WGN America had some potential when they started their Outta Sight Retro Night several years ago. I thought they would add more classic TV into the mix. But it looks like they are starting to go the same way as every other cable network with the same shows that air on multiple networks (like How I Met Your Mother).

I started watching WGN America more regularly when they went to having the retro night on Sunday and carrying Corner Gas. Now that they've dropped them, all I might watch is Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, or Cheers if I happen to be home on a weekday afternoon, which doesn't happen often. Otherwise they've lost me as a viewer for the most part.

WGN, then and WGN America has been on Comcast in Central CA (Fresno)( and the former Company before) since 1993, and is available, along with ION on the lifeline Basic Basic cable service.
