WGN Radio Studio

I'm not from Chicago, but decades ago, I saw a picture of WGN's studio. Then, it seemed to be a huge, oval, room, with stained wood walls. To me, it looked more like a court room, with the disc jockey setup in the center of the room.

Does anyone recall this studio? Is it still used (perhaps it is a TV studio now).

I'd appreciate any information on this.

Wow, just thnking;

Never an "oval" studio- ever on Bradley Place. At 2501 W Bradley the 3 radio studios were "rectangular" rooms on the south side of the second floor. They were across from the tv projection room and the small tv studio where the 1pm news came from. The control rooms for the 3 (first floor) tv studios had entrances on the second floor.

On Bradley, the far East radio studio had a piano and carpeting, and living room furniture when Franklyn MacCormack was there. Wally came from the center room.

They have gone through several configurations at their present 435 N. Michigan studios, using the storefront and several other rooms.

The room that "looks like a courtroom" with "stained wood walls" may have been there. I have a picture w/Uncle Bobby in a similar room.

They have been in the present location for over 10 years (maybe 15).

Presently, the announcer sits elevated at a table w/the console, and he faces a lower counter with multiple mic positions arranged in a half circle.

The rack to the announcers left has cd players, and there was a turntable. Steve works the board and Johnnie faces him, with (usually) her back to the producer.

Milt has a board op. I'm pretty sure everyone else works their own board.

The producer faces the announcer straight ahead in an adjacent windowed room. The newsman is in a windowed room about 45 degrees to the announcers right. Cubs, Hawks, Northwestern, and the other remotes are fed to "Master Control" which (I think) is behid the newsroom.

There are 2 doors in the studio, one facing the announcer on the South wall and one to the right of the newsmans room.

The 2 church programs on Sunday and the Outdoors show are recorded. Lots of the Saturday 5am farm show is recorded. Orion has a "home studio" as well as one at his desk in the Trib building. The traffic reporters are usually not at the Michigan Ave. studios.

WGN is the Cadillac of radio.

I think the "oval" part of carlvandorden's post may refer to the curved back wall of the Showcase studio (the storefront) that I can see in the pics I took when I toured there in '91 with Dan Falado. I'm pretty sure I screwed up his name.
