WGNY's "Fox Oldies" Needs a Doo-Wop Show

Earlier today, I listened to WKNY and I listened to a doo-wop show with Warren Lawrence and I enjoyed it and I'm a huge fan of doo-wop music. It's from 4 PM until 6 PM and I loved it so much. In addition to that, my prediction is that "Fox Oldies" needs a doo-wop show playing nothing but classic doo-wop like the Five Satins, the Cleftones, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, the Capris and the rest from the doo-wop past. I used to listened to that show when Rick McCaffery was doing the "Doo-Wop Cruise" as part of the "Solid Gold Jukebox" every Friday night on WBPM's former "Cool 92.9" until Pamal took over in 2007. As of now, "Fox Oldies" did have a doo-wop show at all. Now we got specialty shows including "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits" with Dick Bartley, the same show when it was usually heard on both WBPM and on WHUD for many years and of course, the "Classic Countdown" show playing some of 20 biggest songs of each year and it throws in a few 80's songs on there. I recorded that show each and every Sunday afternoon. After the show, it went jockless for a number of hours until Van Ritshie comes in, and still there's no doo-wop show.

To my suggestion, why did WGNY did not have a doo-wop show. I missed Rick McCaffery so much when he was on another station before "Fox Oldies" came along a few years later. I didn't listened to that show when Rick was on WKIP back in early 2007 after he left WBPM and it didn't come out really well at night because of IBOC which is interfering the station. That lasted 3 years until it ended around Halloween 2009. I was mentioned that Rick would come out of his retirement to do a show on "Fox Oldies", but it's not going to happen, but this station needs a better doo-wop show, just like the way Rick McCaffery and Don K Reed used to do that for years. If "Fox Oldies" needs a doo-wop show, why not put in Buffalo Bob Corisino to do a show on Sunday for three hours.

IMO, WGNY needs a doo-wop show, but I only listened to it on Saturday afternoons on WKNY, because the doo-wop show on "Fox Oldies" is lacking. Any thoughts?

WEOK and WALL have a new show Sunday mornings, 8a - 1p. Scott Shannon's "Crusin America." A good mix of Doo Wop and Late 50's R&R. Check it out!

;D I agree with you on this one, Disney. Doo Wop is a great format for many of us 60-somethings. I get out of work between 4 and 5 on Saturdays, and can't wait to tune in WKNY and Warren Lawrence. He's one of my favorite radio personalities. Don't forget The Diablos, The Eternals, The Tokens, and Randy & The Rainbows.

Just to bump this thread from awhile ago. "Fox Oldies" didn't have a doo-wop show, but not on Sundays after "Rock Roll Remember" it's just a waste of automated music from 6:00 PM until 6:00 AM and no doo-wop show. And the reasons why did "Fox Oldies" did not play "Morse Code of Love" by the Capris. This song is a classic from 1982, and it should've play it on WGNY. Here is an example of a song that you don't hear on "Fox Oldies".

I recall that Fox Oldies did have a doo wop show on Sunday afternoons for awhile with Buffalo Bob Corsino from noon to 2 pm. Unfortunately the station did a way with it for whatever reason about a year or so ago. I wrote to Fox questioning their move yet never received a response. Who else is better positioned to resurrect the idea ... yet Fox does nothing about it. If they browsed through the threads, it is apparent how many people (especially those from NYC and Long Island) are aware of this station and miss the former CBS-FM that played doo wop and pre-1964 music. I'll never understand Fox ... opportunity knocks but they don't answer the door. Anyway for those of you who do not know, John Mansi does a great doo wop show every Sunday nite from 8 pm to midnite on WVOS FM 105.7 that has been on the air for many years. Come on Fox .. wake up and smell the coffee.

I hate to say this, but radio stations pay little if any attention to these message boards. We represent a very small sliver of the audience. What might help is if everyone who enjoys a doo-wop show write to WGNY directly; I mean organize a letter writing campaign and maybe they might listen.

Or you might have an option where you can listen to a doo-wop show. You've got Allan David Stein where he hosts the "Doo-Wop Drive" every Friday night from 7 to 10 PM on WMTR, Warren Lawrence plays doo-wop every Saturday afternoon from 4 to 6 PM on WKNY, John Manzi is also hosting the "Bop Shop" every Sunday night from 8 to midnight on WVOS-FM and finally if you are up in Albany, Cool Bobby B is hosting the "Doo-Wop Stop" every Sunday night from 7 to 10 PM which is the same time slot as Allan David Sten. It's on WROW's "Magic 590". If you want "Fox Oldies" to bring back a doo-wop show, write a letter or send an e-mail to WGNY and tell 'me to bring back the doo-wop show. If you want Rick McCaffery to come out of his retirement and work for "Fox Oldies", you should write a letter to bring Rick McCaffery back, or maybe they should bring Gary Lee Schwartz back and bring the "Solid Gold Jukebox" back to the airwaves along with the "Doo-Wop Cruise". That would be a great idea for all you doo-wop fans out there would like to see it come back.

And speaking of doo-wop, there's actually a link to the "Doo-Wop Stop" with Cool Bobby B. He is also being syndicated on many radio stations including WROW's "Magic 590", but I don't see it coming to "Fox Oldies" anytime soon. But I would love to see Cool Bobby B's "Doo-Wop Stop" coming to WGNY's "Fox Oldies". Here is the link to the "Doo-Wop Stop".

Who is going to pay for it? If John Manzi didn't sell his own spots, the show wouldn't be on.
Same story elsewhere. You have to produce your show, get your own music/cds etc, and then sell the time as well. No easy task considering no one thinks 55+ will spend any money. Lets not forget do the show on air. Then the stations wants some ridiculous take on the money for time they couldn't sell themselves.

Oldies/Doo-Wop shows are like bookstores now. Everyone loves going there, they will read the books and hang out, but at the end of the day, they don't buy the books.

Like TC says--- they want the programmer to do the work, and most of the time these shows are on a time slot thats difficult to sell, like a sunday afternoon. Typical response from the top brass. As was stated earlier, Fox oldies is poised to have a feature show like this, and could possibly sell some time. This would be highly desirable, especially better than Van Ritshie Giving the time away since its all about him.

Since I have the soapbox- Fox oldies' ratings havent been all that great and a lot of work needs to be done. Van and Corsino have to go. Nice guys, but these guys violate every rule that was beat into me when I was learning the ropes: 1) Don't stop the music--2) never ever laugh at your own jokes--3) never ever sing along with an outro--4) no inside jokes--5) lose the ego-- 6) Corsino seems to think he has to stay something stupid or irrrelevant after each song, between songs---Like I said, keep the music flow going, and if you do a stop set, one thought per break, then the spots--7) Never ever announce that you are going to a commercial break--this gives the listener chance to switch stations...

I am also starting to see some repitition---c'mon guys- I know you have the tunes

I feel better now
oldies4ever ;D

You got that right! I just want to let you know that I listened to WKNY about a week ago where Warren Lawrence plays two hours of nothing but doo-wop music from 4 until 6 PM Saturday afternoons and I enjoyed it. "Fox Oldies" still hasn't a doo-wop show since Bob Corisino did on Sunday afternoons from noon to 2 PM, so they brought Joe Manglass a shot to do a Sunday morning show replacing "Buffalo Bob". What a dumb move. Did you know that Gus Gossert used to have a doo-wop show? Yes he did. Gus hosted a show on WPIX-FM on weekends for six full hours playing doo-wop music. That was from 1971 where it predates CBS-FM as an oldies station. WKNY has it on Saturday afternoons with Warren Lawrence and he did a great job, and so does Jon Manzi did a great job on WVOS-FM on Sunday nights from 8 until midnight playing rare and obscure doo-wop from the original 45 and 78 that you don't hear anyplace else. There is an aircheck of Gus Gossert from around 1971 where he plays doo-wop music. I have a link to it, so here it is.

First Of all if you bothered to read the thread you would know that WGNY is Oldies emphasis on the older music it is not country, to my knowlege never was, although sister station WJGK used to play it on HD3. On WGNY HD2 the owners, Sunrise Broadcasting broadcasts their own Techno-pop called ‘The Drive”’, which is also covered on two translators. Why in the world would they switch it to an out of market Christian Station WJIV 101.9 Cherry Valley NY owned by CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING SYSTEM, LTD.
You are either confused or just trolling trying to stir up a conversation. ::)
