WGOV DJ Killed Outside of Station

Not sure why, but I have noticed in my last few trips south that Valdosta, which once seemed to be a nice little town, has turned into a dump. Crime, poverty, and blight seems to have taken over. Even the Shoney's off I-75, is boarded up.
We used to go up to Valdosta to Wild Adventures several times a year when they were having those country music concerts. It did used to seem like a nice town. Haven't been up there in about 3 years.
The WGOV story was on Tallahassee's local news tonight. I believe WGOV-FM is an urban-formatted station.

WGOV-FM is now V96, an Urban station. It was once WLYX-FM known as LYX(Licks) 96.
It's a bit off topic...Does anyone have an explanation for Valdosta's decline? Did a large employer leave the area? At one time, that was a place along I-75 to eat, sleep, gas up, and regroup on your way to and from Florida. These days, both exits look "ghetto" and more like a place to avoid. ???

Speaking from a city that is dealing with crime, I may know what's wrong with Valdosta.
It's possible that a well known AFB and/or major job provider went under and shut down.
Once that big job provider leaves, then things will slowly go downhill.
When the downhill happens, then an element of gangs, drug sellers and criminals will move in and take things over.
When those things creep in, it'll cause a city to lose many of its businesses and jobs.
Once the jobs and businesses leave, then it's hard to get new ones to come in and take over.
My hometown is a prime example of that.
And yes we did have a AFB in operation but it went under around 1979 and we haven't recovered from that closing. (Yes I'm showing my age here!)
And no we don't have no interstate running through it.

P.S. Just curious to know if Valdosta is experiencing a gang and/or drug issue like my community is having? If so, that might explain the recent shooting. My hometown is always making the news, because of the mass shootings and drug dealings that occur at least every other day.

We still consider Valdosta a "stop and gas up" town when we travel to Florida. I have 2 friends that live there ateending Valdosta State and I've been told the city is just boring.

Valdosta, Memphis, are sadly what happens when employers cut cost and move working class jobs to foreign countries to save money and increase their profits.
Problem is, if everyone is out of work, who can AFFORD to buy the products/services they are selling?
Macon is another example. I grew up in Vidalia and as a child, we had Macon west of us by 90 miles and Savannah east of us by 90 miles. Those two cities had the malls but my dad would ask my mom to go to Macon instead of Savannah because at the time (early to mid 90's) Savannah had horrible crime while Macon was clean and safe.
Fast forward 15 to 20 years and now it's the other way around. That same mall my dad would ask my mom to go to because of it being safe is now been taken over by gangs. Macon's population has actually went down as Bibb county schools systems have been classified as one of the lowest end schools in the state.
