WGPA for sale?

I know, WGPA has been for sale, :30 seconds at a time, but...

Rumor has it that Ken Matthews is in negotiations with Timmer Broadcasting Company to purchase WGPA. Anyone have the scoop?

(If Timmer fires up an FM translator, don't be suprised to see the price tag quickly increase to seven figures!) ;D

It will not happen immediately, but the end of WGPA under its current form is probably going to happen by 2011. Even so, let the people at WGPA and its loyal listeners alone. The vitriol and snootyness towards this station is unwarranted. Joe Timmer, Steve Capwell, Dennis Christman, Ned Richards, Jarret Brown, Mike Sweigart, Jeff Dean, along with Donna Walden and Joe Zaretsky in the office are all fine people. They work hard. Yeah, maybe people could sell besides Timmer, but it is not easy, especially in todays economy. When the party is over, it will be a sad day. Until then, WGPA will persevere onward.

renegade? comments like yours are helping to sink what's left of the local radio industry. should wgpa roll over and play dead? if someone who had a clue was actually running wgpa, you wouldn't have to be on this chat board telling us sad stories about how hard everyone works and what fine people they are. are the people at cat country not bustin their ass and working hard ? they've got a 10 share-are the 2 people left at am790 not working hard ? they have a 6 share. wgpa is a programming train wreck. at times it's painful to listen to and that's too bad because it could have real ratings and make real money in this market even with the economy. am790 and wgpa- pretty much your lehigh valley am's that show up: one's gotta a 6 share and one's gotta 1 share. why do you think that is ? this is just radio talk now not snooty talk.

When are the painful moments and what can be done to prevent them in the future? What advice do you have? Where are the problem areas? Send me a pm. Thank You.

Anytime Joe Timmer is on are the painful moments. I worked at GPA for a number of years when the Chadwicks owned the station. Hank Chadwick blew it big time when he had a chance to apply for full-time broadcasting and didn't and Joe Timmer swooped in when Hank was sick and bought the station for a song and dance. I have to say that I'm surprised that Timmer has kept the station going as long as he has. After all, this is a guy who wanted to string together a bunch of mic cords and lower them off the roof of the building to broadcast live from Musikfest and wanted to know how many mic cords we had and how far away from the building we could get them to reach.

That was then, and this is now. WGPA does own a Marti. When Timmer's making dough from High School sports on FM, you might change your tune.

Hell, you might even ask him for a job... ;)

He owned a Marti back then, too (probably the same one he has now). Problem was that he didn't want to have to work out a deal to broadcast from MusikFest, so he just wanted to broadcast from the lawn in front of the building and didn't have the advantage of a phone line.

As for working for him again... how can I put this... when Rush Limbaugh has a sex change operation and declares that he has the utmost respect and love for all democrats, I would be about half-way toward knowing that it's time for me to work for Timmer again. When Charles Manson is elected president of the united states, with the post-sex change Limbaugh as his running mate, I'll be about three-quarters of the way there. And when Joe Timmer takes a leave of absence from 'GPA because he's gotten a multi-million dollar contract to model Speedos, thanks to an endorsement from the Manson/Limbaugh administration, I'll work for Joe Timmer again.

Back in the mid 90's when I worked for WGPA with Bob Wolken, Freddy Fredericks Jr. Bobby Koch and Sue Rauch, we used to lower the cables and broadcast live at Musikfest. we also did live broadcasts from Matey's via the old phone line trick. I would go back into radio and apply to work there again if Ken did buy it,. This station is a gold mine waiting to happen if it was programmed properly.

PS.... I was the 6 pm to signoff, Mon - Fri and Saturday &Sunday afternoons til signoff

That's a great post, Chuck. So are you readying your vocal chords?

The egos on these posts (every market, not just the Lehigh Valley) are amazing.

As crazy as it sounds, with some direction, this station could actually make some money, w/o people having to sell their own shows

First---A consistent format. Might I suggest a format like WHYL AM in Carlisle. www.whyl.com Soft oldies, standards
A Polka show only on Sunday.

Second-----Drop the talk shows. You're not going to beat AEB AM.

Third-------Get that low powered FM station so you can be on the air 24/7

Once that happens, you could make money running high school sports. Perhaps add Lafayette.
