WGR: a compliment and more criticism

So I missed the actual interview today but went back online to listen to Schopp and Bulldog talking to Steve Montador of the Sabres.

Good work with the original questions and the follow up. Schopp is good at those types of things.

So that compliment leads to my criticism: Schopp admitted just prior to the interview that Montador was THE FIRST SABRES PLAYER they have interview on their show all season.

HUH !?!??!?!??!?

They are "the voice of the Sabres" and talk hockey all the time but they've never had another player on prior to March 9th?

With less than 15 games to go in the season, they all of a sudden decide it's a good idea to bring on a player to talk about the team?

Who is producing? Who is programming? Who is holding the pre-show planning meetings?

Someone fill me in.

only thing I can think of: perhaps since you didnt notice until it was announced, "first sabre"... maybe that is WGR's thinking - why "bother" having/spending money time, etc. when we can just
play the sound bites.

Might not be a money thing and it may not have been WGR's doing, but a matter of the Sabres guarding access to their players up until now. Some teams in all pro sports, especially outside of NYC (where hiding your players from the mikes is impossible), are very protective of their players and like to try to minimize their media exposure, even though the NHL itself wants to spotlight players and prods them to be as available as possible. You'll notice that the team has changed hands...and while Tom Golisano, the previous owner, has never been media-shy himself, some of his front office people like Larry Quinn liked to keep their cards close to the vest and set that tone for the organization. There's a new owner and new management team now, and I sense that they're a lot looser on this issue. You'll probably hear from a lot more players--I notice that on MSG-TV, Ryan Miller recently gave Fran Healy the first long-form (30 minute) one-on-one I've ever seen with him.

Gotta give WGR credit today for having Ted Black of the Sabres on today for a 40-minute segment that included phone calls from listeners. I didn't hear the entire thing but I'm glad I flipped the dial from WECK to WGR during the 5 o'clock hour to hear Black's interview. Good work by Schopp and Bulldog and whoever else was involved in landing that interview.

Speaking of WECK, when are they going to have Pegula or Black or SOMEONE from the "new" Sabres organization/front office on the air?

Kramer...you're starting to become a clown on these posts. Use your head. Pegula on WECK when WGR is the voice of the Sabres? The post doesn't even deserve a response...why am I wasting my time?

Pegula was making the rounds, talking to The Buffalo News, the local TV stations, a few of the FM morning shows.

I figured Brad would reach out to Pegula/Black for an introductory interview about their plans for the future.

Yes, I understand WGR is the home of the Sabres. But WECK's battle cry is all about "hometown radio" and what is more warm and fuzzy lately than the Pegula family talking about embracing the franchise's past, improving the game day experience, relating to the fans, etc?

Just wanted to know if Brad is going to be persistent and try and land someone from HSBC Arena for an interview as the team continues to play well and heads towards the stretch run for a postseason berth.

They probably don't have access to too many guys later in the day; games, practices, etc. I know the morning show has Patrick Kaleta on regularly.

Nice work by Brian Koziol and the WGR crew by getting on the air early today to talk about the shocking news of Rick Martin's death.

Letting listeners call in and speak about their memories of No. 7 was a great idea.

That was some good "LIVE AND LOCAL" radio on the AM dial.

entercomm family:

correct me if im wrong - im sincerely not sure because I dont listen ( alot ) to
wkse in the morning ( for a few reasons), but they have had Sabres players on
prior to WGR - (havent they?) .. ..Im not sure, and not certain if it was
this season, that is why I'm asking - if it was this season, can some one
explain why they would pick top40...well, top20(nowadays)radio over
the sports channel covering the games.

RE:
GeorgeKramer, you do have a point of Pegula possibly being on WECK.
He is here, and being welcomed into Buffalo with alot of warm response.
-Would Don Postles ever make a cameo on WGRZ-TV of course not,
but "making the rounds" (esp. being a billionaire and doing what you want),
is not out of the question. . .
-
To be Honest, Its NO DIFFERENT then Pegula making a cameo on ...
say, Shredd and Ragan!!! could see that happening!!! -shredd and ragan,
would be HONORED/welcome him to the show; and it is not out of the
oridnary for a Business man to cross promote his product

Im a fan G.Kramer

Shredd And Ragan do a really good job with coverage of the Sabres. In some cases, much better than what Brad does on his show.

Nick does a good job breaking down hockey stats with the slew of people and crazy cast of characters he parades through the WECK studios in the evening.

I'm sure S&R will eventually get Pegula and/or Ted Black on their show. Maybe not until after the season, but I can see them landing a phone interview and maybe allow some listeners to interact with the new management team.

Brad had Ted Black I believe for a whole hour on Tuesday. Kramer is not a clown.

any chance that vs.(the network) will take the time
to talk to the new owner, or strictly keep it too "hockey"

re: bob1370 ,why does the team hide behind the microphones ??
-
ps: good call, kramer.

wow, three california teams in the playoffs and no one cares lol . . .

I believe genius Kramer was thinking one of them would do a show as in weekly, at least that's how I took it. Occasional extended interviews can be done by any station. Get real guys...he's been like a clown on this forum. SSSKub looks like you signed on around his time, are you one of his sons? Now we got a family affair....

This does not sound like that at all. What owner or president has a weekly show on the radio........Coming up next - The Ralph Wilson Show!:

I was originally speaking about a basic interview, not a weekly or regular show.

Give Brad credit for getting Black on the air and in the studio.

I heard the podcast of that interview. Really well done. Black gets "it" when it comes to establishing positive relationships with local media outlets. For some reason Larry Quinn (other than Chris Parker) had an issue with the staffers at WGR which probably started because of Chuck Dickerson's constant criticism of him and Darcy Regier.

Brad's wild and crazy thought of the month will have to be a pitch for the Sabres to be heard on WECK/WLVL. We all know it will never happen, but I wouldn't put it past him to throw the idea at Pegula and Black just to say he tried.

On a related note, what about the Buffalo Sabres being heard on 103.3 FM if they were to ever leave WGR?

I'm going to check my drawers for my clown nose, dust off the crazy red wig and join the circus...was has come of this board?

What? You call Kramer a clown for asking for something that you said could never happen, then it does......So, instead of just admitting you were wrong, you blame the board?

Ok son of Kramer...read what I said. I felt Kramer with his crazy ideas was suggesting WECK get Pagula on a weekly show. I'm not going to split hairs. Kramer's obsession with WECK has taken over this board and now his sons have joined the circus. Read the board, I'm not the only one complaining.
