WGR Drops Ball

Fox Sports and The Buffalo News reported Monday around noon that the Bills pink-slipped their entire coaching staff, but you wouldn't know much more than that if you tuned in "Buffalo's only 24-7 sports station" which offered only a 20 second headline and "stay tuned" sports breaks inside Jim Rome's nationally syndicated show. So much for the "Buffalo football Monday" and "Buffalo's longest post-game show" promos. Fumble.

Upon further review.

WGR reported this at about 11:35 because I was listening and that's how I found out. Mike Schopp mentioned the Yahoo report when he was on with Thurman Thomas.

WGR can be "great radio" but it can also be maddening. I know I mentioned this in the past, but given this thread, it's important to reiterate. On big sports days, WGR hosts need to be on point at all times. Case in point. I didn't get out of work until 6:30 Monday evening. I put on WGR to catch up on the big development of the day -- the firing of the Bills coaching staff. What I got was an inane bit on mimes. Now, perhaps Schopp and the Bulldog believe they've covered the nut in their first three hours on the air. But I can't emphasize enough how they need to keep in mind the way people use radio. This was taught in Radio 101. A new audience is always tuning in. There's tremendous turnover. You need to be talking sports when that listener tunes in.

I'll admit I have a problem when sports stations engage in lifestyles talk. I tune in a sports station to hear sports, not talk about American Idol or some other lifestyles topic. Now, in the dog days of May and June (especially when the Sabres aren't in the playoffs), I'll give them a break. But on big sports days like Monday the message from the PD should be stay focused and stay on topic. I think the mime bit was somehow related to sports, but it was so lame, I couldn't hit the button fast enough.

That said, this morning was an example of WGR at its best with the weekly Roby Radio hour. It was 60 minutes (minus commercials) of informed analysis from Roby and good probing questions from Howard. Even Jeremy contributed solid content. This is the way sports radio should be at all times. Leave the lifestyles and comedy to Shredd and Ragan. WGR should do what it does best and that is to always be focusing laser-like on the top sports story of the day.

I totally agree with what Phillip says about GR. Schopp will come right out and say something along the line of "we've been talking about the Bills for the last hour and a half and now it's time to talk about something else". At the very least they should come out of breaks with a recap of what went on and at least keep open the option of taking calls on that topic. I can remember back in the WNSA days when I LOVED when Roby, Jim Kelly (the former Buffalo News hockey columnist) and Schopp used to talk hockey. I still enjoy when they talk to a guest like Rob Ray or Paul Hamilton. At least they treat them with respect and will let them air their points of view. On the other hand if you call in and reach Schopp on the wrong day forget about it!

my 2 cents:
when I listen, even after
the bills WON, the host
(shows how much I listen),
I'm sure it is howard simon, but
i Dont think he actually said his name...hmm
...anyways, I turned it off in
less than 5. he would have
"sully" (sullivan)from the buffalo news.
(host was acting like they were *best* friends),
while good ol' 'sully' was feeling take it or leave it.

I turned it off because it was soo frustrating
to listen to 'that guy' you argue with at the bar..
when you are both agreeing(?sp). about some thing
but, feel the need to try to one-up, each other...

very frustrating indeed!
I will say the Lindy Ruff tues.report is awesome...
(but thats not because of 'wgr) that is because
lindy ruff is makes it enjoyable.

Back to the subject at hand...GR may be stymied in covering the Bills right now while the coaching search is on. One suspects a lot of the real decision-making is happening in Ralph Wilson's office out in Detroit with only Ralph, Buddy Nix and the Detroit office bean-counters privy to what is or isn't going on. Meanwhile crazy stories keep hitting the rumor mills, like Bill Cowher (who's already let it be known publicly he wants to stay another year at CBS) as a prospective next coach. Now people do change their minds, but this one's a real long shot...

The folks at GR need to establish a working relationship with WXYT in Detroit, the CBS all-sports outlet--Wilson operates most of the time out of Detroit, WXYT covers the NFL, and it's well known that the owners of the Detroit Lions (the Ford family) are good friends of Wilson, who used to be a minority partner in the Lions before founding the Bills. So WXYT and its football beat reporters might have connections and sources that GR doesn't.

At this point GR is lucky that the Sabres are playing well, winning most of their games and leading the Northeast. The action there is local, they're in on the Sabres' story, and the story right now is upbeat.

I think that the point most people are making is that 'GR is short on sports, and long on "lifestyle". The number of credible sports voices on the station has shrunken from former days. I'd like to hear a lot more from people who know what they're talking about - like former athletes and/or coaches, and a lot less that sounds like the moron at the end of the bar who once played touch football in high school intramurals. Or, never played, but has MENSA on his resume...

RE: qman
it is a very tough station to listen to,
even *AFTER* the bills won a game...
just like the bills, has its moments, but not very pretty.

Oh ok thanks for the clairification Op! GR is tough to listen to on a local level anytime! There's only so much Bills and Sabres talk I can take in one sitting and I'm a fan of BOTH teams!
