WGR Game Misconduct

It's been a turbulent week for the Buffalo Sabres. The team's GM and coach were shown the door and in the turmoil WGR Sabres beat reporter Paul Hamilton went on record saying Jack Eichel, the team's rising star, had "no desire" to talk about a contract extension after his rookie contract expired if coach Dan Blysma remained. According to The Buffalo News, the Sabres and Eichel's agent Peter Fish immediately denied the reports. Fish stated that such reports are "ridiculous in a word."

Sabres owner Terry Pegula was more emphatic in his Friday (4/21) press conference. When asked about a coaching search, Pegula responded, "we haven't talked to anybody," and seemed to bristle when he added, "put that in the 'Jack (Eichel) demanded his coach be fired' category."

To be clear, Hamilton didn't report that Eichel wanted Blysma fired, but that Eichel had "no desire" to talk about a contract extension if Blysma stayed. That may be a semantic defense, but the interpretation was clear. Eichel wasn't fond of Blysma, and his words could have been construed as a "it's-him-or-me" statement. Either way, Pegula was emphatic in calling it "a pure fabrication." Hamilton would have been on solid ground if he had audio of Eichel making such a comment, but it appears Hamilton's comments were interpretive speculation based on reliable sources. In his defense, it happens in politics and sports. This might serve as a basis for commentary, but it's a poor foundation for actual reporting. Fake sports?

Now here's WGR, the Sabres radio partner for many years, and Hamilton in particular, who's been covering the Sabres for WGR for more than 20 years. One wonders how much turmoil has been created inside 500 Corporate Parkway. The Sabres under Pegula don't appeared to be vindictive when it comes to the media coverage, but who'd be surprised if the team enacted retribution of some sort. Hamilton suspended, or out? Sabres radio broadcast rights altered or terminated? It would be extreme, but other professional sports teams have exacted a pound of flesh in similar situations.

The Sabres have missed the playoffs for 6 straight years.
Given that 16 of 32 Hockey teams get in, that's severe ineptitude.
The Bills are even more dysfunctional. Pegula is an incompetent owner.

Entercom is probably more concerned that no playoff games
means less opportunities for revenue. Pegula may not like criticism,
but he's making huge profits. The gullible people who buy tickets are
enablers.

Pegula can always buy his own station if he wants. Remember, that
WGR got the Bills games back because NOBODY else was interested...

I'm betting the only turmoil is the imagined one in this thread. Where else would the Pegulas put the radio rights? Cumulus, where you can get 4 shares for a buck? Townsquare, where there's barely enough bodies to run the joint? WECK? WXRL? No way. Entercom is the only sports game in town.

The radio reporter who made the statement about Eichel should have backed it up. It's interesting how people can read things and interpret them differently. E9's post was reasonable, especially considering what appears on these boards. The "turmoil" question, as I read it, was fair. Watching Pegula's press conference, he didn't seem too happy about the team and its performance. E9 was right about the tone of the guy's voice referring to the report on WGR. Don't expect the Sabres to go anywhere else because WGR will bend over backwards to accommodate the team. They deserve each other. I listened to WGR this weekend and heard some young guy who sounded like he was at the bar in Applebee's "analyzing" the Sabres. I guess if you major in communications at Buffalo State or NCCC, and can read sports updates at a 7th grade comprehension level, you're automatically a sports expert. BTW, why would Cumulus or Town square even want the team? It hasn't been to the playoffs in years.

Cumulus ended its relationship with the Bills. The Bills also
sued Cumulus over "Rights Fees". It's unlikely that Town Square or
Cumulus wants Sabres or Bills games. The teams take the profits and
the Radio partners scramble to break even on the deal.

Eichel did say the Sabres "wasted the season". His advisors
may have concerns about the losing culture and small market.
He would have better opportunities elsewhere...

It was a fair and objectively posed question, rhetorically asking if a reporter's statement will have consequences and create larger issues. It's happened in the past at WGR with both Chuck Dickerson and Art Wander, whose on air demeanor and statements created larger issues. The word "turmoil" was used twice. First to describe the Sabres firing their GM and coach. The second use of the word came in a question, stated to reference the first use of the word, wondering "how much turmoil" might ensue at the radio station. My statement was not predictive, it offered the possibility of extreme recrimination, and also included the possibility that nothing of consequence would happen given the Pegula organization didn't appear to be vindictive types in the past.

Pegula has now dismissed TWO GMs in under 2 weeks.
National sources broke the Whaley news before WGR.
The fact that the Bills and Sabres are in disarray isn't really
breaking news though...
