WGR Program Director Allan Davis

Allan Davis, a longtime radio industry veteran, has been hired as the new program director for WGR 550 AM.

He is the former program director for The Team in Ottawa and The Fan in Toronto.

Davis replaces Andy Roth. He's a Canadian who comes to WGR from the Genesis Group as vice president of programming that operates radio stations in Florida.

Davis is scheduled to begin working sometime in the middle of this month after he relocates from Tampa Bay.

Any thoughts or observations or stories about Mr. Davis that Buffalo folks should be aware of?

The Central Terminal doesn't have train service anymore...he may have to go to the Depew station on the run....
Just sayin'. ???

Any early word on how Allan is settling in at 500 Corporate Parkway?

Who is literally showing him around the building: Tony Caliguri? Kevin Carr? Randy Bushover? Others?

Curious when he calls a staff meeting for all the on-air talent and support staff of 'GR 55.

It's not the Pentagon. He's an adult and done PD dance before. Most likely he knows the steps.

Got in the car yesterday around 5:45pm and caught the last segment of Jerry Sullivan with Bulldog and Brad Riter.

Then at the 6 o'clock hour they replayed the first segment of the day, which was a newsworthy interview of Stevie Johnson and his new contract with the Bills, but I thought that was curious that it just was plopped right in there with no intro or mention of it at the end of the 5 o'clock hour (at least I didn't hear Bulldog or Brad say anything.

Then after that there was no Brad, just Bulldog, with Bulldog mumbling something about Brad having to leave early.

I thought that was strange, so I made a few calls and got in touch with a former sales colleague.

Turns out Brad left early.... to go do his UB Bulls freelance gig.... on WECK 1230 AM!

Maybe it's just me, but I found it ironic that Brad checked out at 6pm to go do work on the station he used to work for and actively promoted as the alternative to WBEN and WGR.

What goes around comes around, I guess?

I'm happy for Brad that he's finding paying gigs to make a living, but I just thought that was strange that he would leave an hour early from the ONLY SPORTS STATION IN TOWN to go to work at a competing station for a SPORTS PROGRAM.

Oh well...

It's called "having a prior commitment", George. Brad obviously was committed to doing the Bulls gig before he took the fill-in gig at WGR. I'm sure that all interested parties knew about it ahead of time. As for Bulldog "mumbling", what do you expect? Do you really think he's going to say "Brad had to leave to go and do the UB Bulls game on another station that we don't own"?

PS - Your "former sales colleague" must LOVE hearing questions like that from you.

BTW, while we're on the topic, anybody notice any real changes at WGR since Allan Davis took over?

I have noticed that they frequently come back from commercial with soundbites from something happening that day, either quotes from a major guest or commentary from the WGR hosts.

Seems to be less of the goofy sound effects and noises on the PM drive show.

Don't hear the morning show a lot, but I have heard some different guests on when I have tuned in, which is better than using the standard Paul Hamilton or Joe Buscaglia when they can't find someone else. Those two have a role, but sometimes under Andy Roth's reign, were used far too often when there are always other experts that can be used.

I'm curious what Allan is going to do with Colin Cowherd's show. I still think they could go totally local during the Bills season, with Brad Riter or Sal Cappacio (sp?) filling that two hours each weekday if they aren't working their other gigs at that time.

Really like Brian Koziol's work on the Sabres postgame shows, the guy is a solid broadcaster and seems to be the perfect fit for that role.
