WGRR-NIGHTS/WKNDS

Syndicated programming for nights and weekends. That was often referred to as the begining of the end at one time.Does it still signalbad times ahead for the format or station?

WGRR is only sindycating 2 hours in the evening and 10 hours on Sunday as far as i know. I would imagine they are obligated to repeat the history of rock and roll marathon that started over memorial day weekend. It will be interesting to see what happens after they complete the history and have to go back to regular live programming. I was just thinking i havent heard anything in regard to WGRR for a while, thought maybe they would flip over the 4th of July weekend but as of now that hasnt been the case

Also Dick Bartley on Saturday nights but that's been happening for awhile.
______________
I'll get back to you when I think of a cute quote

Gee, top quality syndicated oldies programming on an oldies station. And a couple of talk shows that pull huge numbers in that stations demos plus big advertising bucks where no money was being made before. Seems to me that the people running WGRR know a lot more about radio as a business and entertainment medium than most of the people on this board ever will.

> You have a good point about DICK BARTLEY.It all comes down being cheaper than live local .Using the syndicated show and all the other fill in shows to make up for local does not say much for the format ,if it needs to rely on fill in and syndication to pay the bills.Maybe oldies is no longer a strong enough format to stand on its own. Most of the people on this board know that using syndication and non format programing has always been a last ditch effort.WGRR had some very succesful sat programs and using the old standby DICK BARTLEY was the cheap easy way out to get good fill in

If Infinity is making money with how to shows and gardening tips rather than playing oldies, then maybe they should flip to all talk if it brings in more revenue. I agree, non format programming does suggest that Infinity is loosing faith in the oldies format.

BINGO! The bottom line for any station is 'the bottom line'. Fact of the matter is, weekends are traditional sampling periods. This (6-9am Saturday & Saturday night) seems to be well thought out by the folks on Reading Road.

Music drives any format. But if you listen to any successful mid-major market station, you'll find it doing similar things. Some stations just want to be 'juke boxes'. In this day of mp3 downloads and burnable CD's...that path may not be the most prudent.

Tank, you're right on the nose. The Oldies demo is more information driven than a younger demo and crave a little more news, weather, landscaping, etc. Yes, they still love their oldies music, but you can get away with having some of these types of features and be successful at it with these listeners. We do that with our Oldies station too, for example, in the morning we do 2:30 newscasts rather than 1:30 on our other music stations. If more Oldies stations/programmers did their homework and realized that this demo enjoys that mix of music and info then more of them would still be playing Oldies music. We're in a smaller market than Cincy, but yes we do even air IU basketball and football. There's alot of alumni and boosters that are huge Oldies listeners.

> Oldies done in the formats true style would include a more full
service schedule. To duplicate a true 50/60s format you would have on the hour news and probably local info type programs on off peak times.True enough babyboomers may have interest in more than just music. It still seems that the fill in shows are done to save money in slow time slots.Given the success of DICK BARTLEY indicates baby boomers still like call in oldies. All the more reason to have a local live call in show.Using syndication in lieu of that seems more cost driven than matching the demos evolution.Hopefully the thought that they are just fitting the new demo is correct rather than just trying to hang on a little while longer
