Just saw on the Variety Hits forum - (where I hang out for some reason) - that per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Urban AC 107.1 WJJJ is changing to SAM 107.1 with call letters WGSM as a variety hits format. At least it frees up a nice set of calls for a JACK station somewhere.

Can they turn down the audio?

Some digital radios just can't handle that 120% negative mod!

Seriously, they are WAAAY to loud and need to bring it down. It is unlistenable on some digital radios.

WGSM's audio has one of two problems (or both)

1) Either they are pushing the whole thing too hard
2) They are running with high levels of negative modulation (possibly the polarity out of the processor into the transmitter is the wrong direction).

On more than one PLL radio, it sounds like the carrier dumps on peaks. WGSM is the ONLY station I have ever heard exhibit this problem on ANY of these radios.

All were observed in the main lobe and at a far enough distance (6-10 miles) to avoid any thought of overload (so this is also NOT a null problem).

Analog receivers handle the problem better, but basically they're running the risk (and having) problems on some PLL sets.

On all radios, they seem to be *at least* a few dB louder than everyone else. Factor that into what I hear on my digital radios, this indicates to me a modulation problem.

OK, I got that...but the calls on 740 are now WNYH...the post was about that the WGSM calls (World's Greatest Small Market) are now outside of Pittsburgh.

Hard to break old habits. I know people who still refer to WLIM as WYFA or WSUF ;)

I agree. WNYH is slamming the audio to the wall, if what I heard the Friday before Christmas was any indication. Not only pinching off the carrier at 100%
negative modulation, but it sounded like the audiuo was flattopping badly.Back in October, they were testing with Gospel and the quality was great...they forgot to power down one night,and I heard 'em on I-476 just outside Philly
blowing the doors off CHWO...the way the audio is now it's a waste of 20 kW.

Ah. . .but how many people still refer to it as WPAC ? You can still find the clocks around Long Island.

Only when I play the jingles!

I believe there was (or maybe still is) a WPAC clock on a building in Greenlawn (near Ray Adell's place). I know there was an old WLIR clock up in the Oyster Bay area in a storefront. My friend tried to buy it from him, he wouldn't sell.

I don't know where to find the clocks, but I can tell you where the old WPAC Gates Executive Consoles are...And still in primary use too I might add.
