WGSO 990

I have decided to give you guys that are trashing the board-ops at WGSO my points about myself. 1) I never said I was a news reader in the first place-I only found out about that part of my job two days before going to that format. When you did not want to do that in the first place, you are not going to put a lot into it. 2) WJ Class of 81. 3) USMC 82-86. 4) Started with Ken Trahan calling in reports at Prep Football games. 5) Only got into board-op work doing Prep Football game and UNO Basketball and Baseball games. 6) Made move to Slidell to bring in some extra dough, so I can help pay for medical supplies for a 7 year old son with Juvenile Diabetes. 7) Will only do weekends- that's all I want. As long as my weekday job pays me more than Radio! Cat, be cool!

Hello my dear! Johnny, there is no way "they" could expect you to be a newsreader. And for those who don't know this, WGSO has a habit of springing things on people. The format changes overnight, with little more than a hastily written memo. Johnny, you were always one of my favorites- waaaay back when the station was still Biz. =) Miss you tons! You were hired to do board ops, and that is what you do. If the situation works for you, then keep trucking on my friend. Many hugs!!!

How come not a single person - not one - has ANYTHING good to say about WGSO? Is it purely and totally a piece of trash, or can you guys come up with SOMETHING positive to say? Can anything out there save this Titanic? What if Wilkie went to work there?

I have nothing good nor bad to say about WGSO or anyone who works there. Yes, I have a friend who works there now and one who resigned. I don't think either of them care about what I think or don't think about the station.

That said, Johnny, I think your statement, quoted above, is an insult to the folks who do go out and give 110% for their career. Part time or not, personal issues or not, you should always give it your best shot. Have I always been happy with my situation? Of course not, very few are, but if you are a PROFESSIONAL then you make whatever format or job you are assigned sound the best you can. Did I like playing urban music at Q93? Hell no! Was I overjoyed when the hot a/c I was at went country? Nope. Could the listeners tell that I didn't like what I was doing? Not a chance. A pro can make you think that his/her entire life revolves around what he's doing on the air even if he/she is forced to play Chinese records backwards.

Just my two cents.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program already in progress.

For nearly two years, I sounded like I enjoyed working with da Fatman. Best fun I had in my 30 years only second tp Coast 102 in Gulfport. I'd do both again. Sorry to hear about Cap, but hey, if you don't care for him or WGSO, don't listen. I miss radio but not the certain few people and they know who they are. They'll screw anybody. It's hard to do a job with those folks but let 'em have it. Why bother? There are better things out there.

Enjoy the friends you've made in the business and dump on the brown-nosers.

PS...I loved playing softball with Kenny Trahan. How's the hood of your car?

Your comments are duly noted- Don Banks, but if you ever listened to Ken Trahan's Original Prep Football Report or my own show Prep Plus, you can tell I put in 250% to what I do best. You slam me about not wanting to read news when I defended you, Oldie King, Blair and the rest to that person who said TIX-FM was better and KOOL sucked, I should maybe not have. But then again, I still have respect for all of you, Yes all of you!! NO HARD FEELINGS!! Cap, I hope you are doing well, my friend!

Thanks but I'm a big boy and can defend myself.

As I've stated before, I don't care who likes what station and could not care less if someone compared the old Kool to TIX-FM and found Kool lacking. What I know is that we all put forth our best effort no matter what we were assigned. When it was Blair and me the show was 50/50. When Mitchell took over he made it very clear that he was the "star" and I was second banana. To make matters worse I found out about the change upon returning from vacation. I had absolutely no say about it. I didn't like it but I dealt with it and never made my feelings about that known to anyone who was listening. Do you think Blair liked being demoted to middays?

By your own admission you put 250% into what you do best. That's great! That's as it should be, but to slack off on the things you don't feel you're good at is what I disagree with. I have listened to Ken's Prep show and it's nicely produced. Put that same 250% into news reading or whatever you think you're not strong at and eventually you'll be great at everything. That's all I was trying to say.

No disrespect intended and no hard feelings whatsoever on this end either. I may be out of the biz right now but I still have close to 30 years behind a mic and don't mind sharing what I know with those who want to listen.

And I had fun working with you Blair at Coast 102. Mostly going to Saints games, hanging out in the parking lot which is now the N.O. Arena.

Hanging out? Maybe passed out in heliport parking lot. There are videos & pictures of those dumber days but fun. Carried 19 cups of dome foam back to the seat one game. (Not as bad as Bo Walker falling out the loge one game) I'm still wondering who's the DumbGuy? Miss the coast and seeing Rhonda Weidner on the tube. She still makes me weak in the knees.

I hope WGSO does well, even though it'll be tough. They're folks from here, not picked by someone behind an 10 grand oak desk in Bumf*%. I worked with Clancy & Trahan back in the late 70's & early 80's at "TIX-AM". Both good people. (Trahan's downfall, Rummel grad) I know of the others but not personally. It's local folks. Too bad there aren't more of 'em...with the exception of, Michael Costello. Now, there's a genius!

And yeah Banks, I got snaked by the master but I got to sleep in.

Fatman, I know you can handle your own, I was actually defending myself on my own preference on the oldies stations. You know, thinking back, you are exactly right. I realized that I did put that reference about reading news in the wrong context, it did bother me but I did give it my best, you should have seen the copy we had to read from. I did, according to Mike Fazande of Movie Talk, sound like a YAT doing news. Thanks for the advice! Leave news at WGSO to Jude Young and Jay Brooks, and I'll continue to report and host Sports shows and produce shows here only. And drive a vacuum truck during the week, as long as my pay continue to go up.

I must compliment you guys on the discussion of WGSO. It's good to know that while there is always room for improvement, people can express their opinions in the right manner. Thanks again, I have to go and predict the NFL games this Sunday.

WGSO is in it's infantsy, give'em some slack. At least their trying something new.

i have seen many vicious crticisms of wgso 990 am and to all of you who think you know radio hey i have one thing to say to you guys why not apply if you think you can do better come on give this station a chance they have the best sports talk lineup by far in new orleans radio. [EDIT]

[EDIT-inflammatory]

best sports linup :D now theres a laugh... ;D wwl is it buddy..sorry ! nobody gives a rats behind about prep football! ;)

Best sports lineup? Without Wilkie? Now come on....

wwl is just better. even if they had bob delgorno doing sports it would be better than the high school dribble on 990.

WWL is, of course, WAY better - WWL has Wilkie. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can carry his microphone. He is god of the airwaves, and unless WGSO can pry him away, WWL will continue to rule. Maybe Starr can give Wilkie a several year deal at, say, $1M per year, and partial ownership of the station? Think Wilkie might go for that? Or, does he have network aspirations?
