WGST back in the "News Monster" days

Looking at the dates of the news headlines, this was one week before the Memorial Day Massacre of 1997, aka Nancy Zintak's  Planet Radio fiasco.

Funny how of the three stations listed GST is the only one left.

RIP 96rock and Peach. My two favorite Atlanta stations ever. Oh, how ClearChannel has changed.

I thought Planet Radio was the doing of Tammy Lloyd. In any case, someone lost their job over it IIRC.

I thought Planet Radio was the doing of Tammy Lloyd. In any case, someone lost their job over it IIRC.

Tammy Lloyd was the News Director of this disaster. I'm not sure, but I think she was shown the door the same time as Nancy Zintak.

Zintak and Lloyd were fired during the same week. The decision came down from corporate.

But you also have to remember that this was on a 5k stick that was a disaster at night as well.

I am not do sure? Weren't they also on 105.7 still?

Yes, they were on 105.7 (see the link). They were also on the 50k/1k 640 signal, not 920.

At that time, the 105.7 signal was not as good as it is now. I do not remember if it was still the same power/tower as it was when station was WCHK or if the first upgrade had happened or not. I just remember Boortz on WSB talking about their signal for WGST-FM did not go below I-20.

I can't believe the myth of Zintak being responsible for the News Monster still continues. CC didn't allow local programmers to make such a big change without corporate approval. The local management couldn't even keep corporate fingers off the Orban settings, for pete's sake.

At the point of Planet Radio, was WGST CC or Jacor?
I think it was still Jacor.

They used to have me from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Used to they would do remotes outside the Marietta Civic Center for the Greek Festival every year, and I would sit on the sidewalk and watch Kimmer do his show with "Mikey." I would pay my $1 and walk through the festival in 10 minutes and come back out to watch more live radio.

I thought Pete Davis had the most inventive and interesting show in Atlanta radio at the time. Lots of great stuff with Space Ghost clips.

Then Hannity left for FOX and Ian Punnett came in, who never caught a break on any front for replacing Sean. He was a nice guy and offered to buy me a lunch when I went to one of his remotes at the El Toro near Cumberland.

Then Planet Radio happened, and Punnett got blamed for that. Boneheads in the audience thought it was his idea, and he had to explain on-air he had no control of those sorts of things.

Pete Davis got dumped for the John & Ken Show, which apparently does great in L.A. to this day, but was like the audio version of watching paint dry.

I was excited when I got a college internship with Peach, which consisted of putting invoice carbons into a spiral binder. Got to stand on the balcony with Steve Goss and Kimmer while Kimmer had a cigar, though.

Never had a problem picking them up on FM anywhere from Cartersville to Vinings.
