WGST: kick us when we're up, too

The bottom line is WGST was billing $12-15 million annually as recently as 2005 when Doomquist took over. In 2006 they only billed about 3.5 million and this year looks even worse. That's a HUGE drop, far worse than the ratings plunge, no matter how much you like the new lineup.... or hate the old one.

It's too bad none of the fans of the "New WGST" are advertisers.

Every morning, and I do mean EVERY morning, my radio pops on at 5 a.m., and every morning, my heart hurts because the voice I hear does NOT belong to Tom Hughes. Many, many people miss him terribly, and I still pray for an opportunity to be able to listen to him again. Good observation by jbaxter on the revenue drop; just can't figure how that PD has kept his job (but I don't care, because the station is dead to me). Yes, still bitter, still missing The King.

I miss GST too, but it's gone now. Those responsible for firing everyone will have to live with their decisions, so just let it go and try WSB. They’re not that bad and they have great signal.

Possibly if a few more people had shared your enthusiasm, things would be different. But, maybe the Beatles will get back together....

I feel your pain... although I envy your ability to have awakened to an entertaining and informative broadcast in the morning. I was never able to do that once GST dumped the FM signal -- couldn't listen to the King until I got in the car for the morning trek. That allowed me to listen to Slade's repetitive blather for an hour, then listen to Tom Hughes for the ride in to work. As much as I hate to admit it (and after I had made a promise to myself to avoid all things CC), I've found Randy and Spiff to be the best mix of news and current events, served up in a reasonably entertaining way. BTW, if anyone knows how to reach Mr. Hughes or what he's up to, I'd like to know.

WGST never has done anything near 15 Million....the best year was in 2003 at about 12 Million...it was "decline city" from there....

Al-

Is the audio soooo bad that you refuse to listen??
If you do have a radio( ex.-GE Super Radio)which can actually reproduce frequencies above 3,000 cycles then you would notice the cutoff. The audio would indeed sound "dull." But the audio is no more distorted or compressed than other AM stations in town. The research conducted by CBS back in the 60's revealed that noise is the main "turnoff" factor....not frequency response, clipping(in moderation)or compression.
On my radios, WGST sounds fine. It's a news/talk station....it is not set up for fidelity - it's set to be an audio blowtorch which, on AM, is essential to maximize coverage.
The 5Khz cutoff is ClearChannel corperate policy....it is not a local decision. It is being done to make way for digital AM service.

Yeah- I agree that the WGST audio is, and should be optimized for maximum modulation and coverage. And yes - audio compression works wonders to make a signal sound "good".

But these days, even "cheap" radios are orders of magnitude better than the "cheap" radios of yesteryear. So I think that your judgment of what sounds good on a cheap radio is about as effective, and realistic as most other means. In fact, that was the exact methodology used for early MIL-STD radio testing for the US Army Air Force.

One thing that hasn't changed, and often eludes the casual listener (none of us!) is that AM radio receiver antennas are very directional, and AM has poor noise immunity from local RFI. Siignal-to-Noise is what rules the day. So for any casual listener who thinks a station sounds bad, try the following:

Take the radio outside, away from your DSL modem, light dimmers, CFL bulbs, PC’s and CRT monitors, and all other sources of RFI.
The ferrite-rod antenna inside your radio is what picks up the AM signals, not the whip antenna. So you’ll need to rotate the radio to maximize the signal strength. If the station sounds good, then you can go back inside and start isolating the source of the RFI that was making the station sound “bad”.

If the station still doesn’t sound good, then you’re not getting a strong signal. There’s not much you can do about that, except to move closer to the stick, or get a SELECT-A-TENNA.

How about putting WGST on an HD side channel? WBBM in Chicago is currently available on an FM HD side.
Radio is missing the boat not marketing AM stations on HD. Think about it, wealthy white guys will spend the $300 to put it in their car without blinking if it would sound better and not drop out every time you drove under a powerline. Find the strongest HD sidechannel available right now and promote the hell out of it on the website and on-air. Bet you would sell some radio and increase the ratings.

Much better than another side channel of sappy love songs.....

I think you have a good idea about putting AM news/talkers on HD2 channels. Notice WSB AM can be heard on 97.1's HD2 service.
No one is going to buy HD radios unless broadcasters give them a COMPELLING reason to.....putting popular AM talk stations on the menu might be just the ticket!
P.S. And I'll bet WGST's audio will get no complaints on HD!!!
