WGST to start playing music soon?

With Randy and Spiff starting at WGST soon, I got to ask the question. Given CC's past, if WGST may soon abandon news/talk in favor of a music format.

Knowing CC, it may not be out of the question. Dare I say the "O" word?

Might not be a bad idea... Can't do much worse. But...if they expect anyone to listen to music on 640, they're gonna have to do something about the audio quality. I can only listen to talk on 640 for about 10 minutes before I just can't stand any more. Music would only take about 10 seconds...maybe less before I'd have to switch it off. Worst audio in town.

Wouldnt it be nice to see a ballsy Am station in Atlanta? WGST playing music?
It would be nice.. But of course probably just a dream as CC would not dare do anything different in Atlanta! But a nice thought. Am Lover's thought of Adult Standards, now there's a niche format that would be nice to hear on AM again!

Why is the audio quality on WGST so bad? It has been bad for a long time. It was much better when the station first signed on ... before it was sold to become WGST. Now that I think about it, WGST had bad audio when it was on 920.... very "loud" sound. They sounded louder and worse than the other talk stations in town.

Do they broadcast in HD? That sacrifices some of the robustness of the audio.

While I am a lover of the "Real Oldies," format, I don't think CC will try this on WGST because they have already tried it in Cincinatti on 1530 WSAI and the station nearly fell flat on it's face financially. Now WSAI has hit the "low of lows." They are a News/Talk station carrying Air America Syndicated shows. That is even worse than playing Polka Music. I am in no way knocking the "Real Oldies" format as I personally like the way 50's Rock 'n' Roll sounds on AM. That music was made to sound good on the AM band because at that time AM radio was the only "mainstream" commerical radio industry that existed with only a small handful of FM stations. Until you actually hear "Twilight Time," by the Platters on a distant AM station late at night with the faint sound of AM static in the background, it is hard to understand what I mean.

Hey milepost72 - I agree with the sonic image you painted with the AM static. I’ve spent most of my life calculating and redesigning for the lowest S/N ratio in all sorts of electronic environments for DC to daylight. But hearing the The "Platter Pushin' Papa" play the Platters over the AM static holds special meaning for me, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I grew up with a 5-tube radio at my side every night listening to all of the Clear Channel stations, and the images of SW stations, CHU and WWV that snuck in through the IF. And on warm summer nights, I’d hack together a Germanium Diode and a tiny earphone grounded to the water pipe outside our home in the bushes. I’d string up the longest piece of wire I had up into a pine tree for my antenna.

KDKA was just down the road, so their signal came in like a freight train. WLS, KMOX, WOWO and WSB also made regular appearances in my earphone. The rumor was that back then (1960’s), KDKA ran a gargantuan amount of power. Does anyone know what the power (ERP?) limits were back then?

All of that made me appreciate the art of DX’ing and learning to love that static, the oscillator drift, tuning out the beat frequency and hearing Jim Quinn on KQV telling us that Paul McCartney (aka “The Walrus”) was dead. All of the other boys on my street heard the same news at the same time on the radio, and we all walked out into the street to discuss the possibility of losing Paul McCartney!

As Michael Palin said “try telling the young people to day of that, and they won’t believe ya”!

I've been saying this for a while. GST needs to create an entirely new identity for themselves. 6A-10A they can continue to carry Randy and Spiff as their token local show. 10A-10P carry Air America Programming. 10P-6A carry classic radio programming such as "When Radio Was". Carry Braves games as their schedule dictates. This way their programming will be entirely unique to what WSB is offering. I think this would create a nice little niche for them.

I would move Rush to the Bull. I think he would be a natural fit for them.

While you guys apparently were out to lunch, have you listened to whats on 920 now? good stuff going on over there! their traffic is even giving Capn Herb a run for his money + their line-up is not half bad. A lot more fun than hearing Randy and Stiff ramble on. didn't GST learn anything when they tried putting the regular guys on talk last year? give me Bennett and Laura Ingraham on 920 now any day!
