WGTY STAFF SHUFFLE?

Is there a staff shuffling at WGTY or are we in vacation mode? I hear a lot of different people in different time slots, but they never say they are "filling in" for anyone....unless I just keep missing it.

OK, so I'll answer my own question...saw this on ALLACCESS.COM:

Dan Douglas, former 7-12MID gets MD & moves to middays, the overnight guy, Jeff Diggs, gets the 7PM - 12MID slot , and 24 year WGTY veteran Dave Cannon goes from a prime midday slot to overnights....???

WHAT?????!!!!!

I normally refrain from knocking anyone on this board, BUT...

That is one crappy thing to do to a long-time loyal and talented individual like Boomer. I would speculate that he was making too much money, after all his years of service, except that not paying anyone over poverty level (with the exception of a select few posterior-kissers...and we know who they are) is a time-honored tradition at Times and News. They were totally clueless when I worked there, and obviously, not much has changed.

I shook my head at that one too. I can remember a while back Dave got moved to overnights from middays for a while and then was moved back. I don't understand it, but then again, I'm not on the inside....one woudl think that if you're kicking ass in the ratings already, don't screw with it....but that's just me...

AGREE 100%...CANNON IS ONE OF THE BEST TALENTS ON THAT RADIO STATION.
IT'S SHAMEFUL THEY WOULD MOVE HIM TO OVERNIGHTS, ESPECIALLY SINCE
HIS MID DAY NUMBERS HAVE BEEN DOUBLE DIGITS.

What happened to Dave is a grave injustice! He has always been the consummate professional. He maintains a great attitude and does whatever needs to be done. AND he has the consistent market-leading ratings to back him up. This is all about Donato trying to bring in his own people....just watch ! Pellegrini should probably watch his back. They'll soon be unloading all the older folks under the guise of "targeting younger". Remember these days....before Scott tanks the place!

Meanwhile, now that Times&News has put a complete imbecile like Donato in charge of the place, just how long will Cumeless sit there and let GTY have an 11 share...hmmmm???? I'd dearly love to be the one to take 96.1 country with Pellegrini in AM drive and Boomer on middays.....and put GTY back in Adams County where it belongs!

BL....

Your post brings up a subject that has been a burning question in midstate radio circles since Z-107/Cat Country flipped a few years ago...Does someone else, particularly in the York market, go Country?
Here's my opinion as to why it hasn't happened. If your scenario played out, what would WGTY do? Would they become the 4th major AC/Hot AC in the ADI? (I'm not even counting Class A/Rimshots like WQLV and WQIC). Perhaps they'd like to be the 4th Classic Hits station? (I'm counting WMHX in this category) Or maybe they'd flip and be the 3rd AOR/Active Rock station? How about the 4th CHR, with CHR's heavy Urban/Rap content in rural, conservative Adams County? Its a tough sell, that's why WYCR DUMPED CHR!
No, the likely scenario is GTY would stay Country, and own their home turf in Hanover and Adams County. Then instead of one 10 or 11 share Country station, you'd have two 5-share stations. What's the gain?
Your thoughts?

LETS JUST SAY Z-107 /CAT EVEN IN THE WORST OF TIMES BILLED 2 MILLION
A YEAR. IN THE BEST NEARLY 4 MIL WITH FREE CASHFLOW OF 2MIL.
NOW YES TIMES HAVE CHANGED; COMPETITION IS DIFFERENT, BUT
IN MY OPINION THE MARKET IS WIDE OPEN FOR A COUNTRY FM
TO DO EXTREMELY WELL IN YORK; AND THERE ARE TWO SIGNALS IN PARTICULAR
THAT COULD BE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL IN THE TRI CITY ADI...
BL IS RIGHT ON WITH HIS LINEUP...BUT LETS FOR GOOD MEASURE THROW IN
TOD JEFFERS AND FEARLESS TOO. FARID AND JUDY NEED TO REEVALUATE
AND MAKE 106.7 BACK INTO THE COUNTRY POWERHOUSE IT ONCE WAS.
GRANTED CITADEL DOES NOT WANT TO COMPETE WITH ITS OWN WIOV BUT,
CONSIDER THIS....THEY BOTH COMPETED FOR 20+ YEARS AS COUNTRY STATIONS
AND BOTH MADE A TON OF MONEY.

I really enjoy the country classics on wioo. why wouldn't someone put them on an fm stick. look at the jazz fm's going back to oldies. the country oldies are classics i guess. ps ricky skaggs in york in april.

Maybe there's hope for some of those oldies jocks that disappeared afterall. Hmm... now if we could only remember their names.

Sounds like alot of angry bitter past employees and alot of angry old radio dudes who have long since been replaced. Is this bringing up bad past memories for you? This is radio. Changes are made daily, just because this is a market that never makes changes there has to be some secret conspiracy, I bet the change came from the grassy knoll. OH MY GOD A RADIO STATION IN THE MARKET MADE A CHANGE ALERT THE MEDIA. How many stations have done that recently, Rose?? Change is the name of the game, keep up with the younger demos. For you all working in radio and being the all knowing professionals, you're sure not thinking big picture. The more a station stays the same the more stale it gets. Radio is not forever, sometimes people get replaced...we've all been there. And seeing some of these responses, some more than others.

Todd, thanks for your compliment! Grandole, you make a great point about Z-107's high billing history. I guess the question that would have to be answered, using hard research, is this: Does the "hole" exist and the potential billing exist in today's much tougher radio environment, to justify blowing up an existing, billing format that has a 12 year history and a considerable following and go through the ground-zero start-up process? Obviously making such a change worked well for YCR. For Z-107, 20/20 hindsight, it may have been the wrong decision, despite MIX's modest success.
I would also like to add a good word about my long-time friend Dave Cannon.
It would be hard to find a more dedicated, devoted and professional broadcaster than Dave. I can only hope that this change is just a temporary setback in Dave's long and successful career in the business he loves and does so well.

Interesting post by fmmeterreader regarding change.....you're exactly right, this market doesn't have a lot of change very often. However, as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...WGTY has been kicking ass in the York market for a lot of years now and with the same basic line-up (give or take a morning show or two...or three). However, if you are consistently pulling double digits & making pretty good cash, why would you completely blow up your personality line-up that's been giving you top ratings in order to "serve the younger demos"? I'd love to know the business case that was put together to justify the moves. And fmmeterreader....would love to hear your definition of what "big picture" WGTY has in mind with this "change". I know my eyes are getting bad because of my age, but I certainly can't see it. ;D

That's a bummer for Boomer, but at least he still has a full-time job as an AT. Overnight isn't the end of the world, there's an overnight work force, along with night owls and insomniacs, and they're pretty loyal.

Last year, I tried to return to Radio. One of the jobs was WGTY's Overnight slot; I was declined. Not a big deal, the station's in The Boonies and I realized just how much I don't like most modern Country. 8)

Whatever happend to Dave "Boom Boom" Cannon or Kasey Lee Sommers?

Dave Cannon has been at WGTY since they went Country in 1984...he's now doing overnights there (but that's another story for another time)....Casey Summers I beleive is out of the radio business...worked with her at the old HOT 105.7 for a little while...not sure what she is doing now...

AFAIK, Casey is enjoying retired life in Spring Grove. Her husband is a police officer, and she was turning up on GTY on fill-in once in a while, but not recently. We worked together on the hill as well, but before Hot, it was the original Q106/WNOW back then in 1980.

This is nothing but a cheap, low end, small time operation, with the way its treats loyal employees. The word will get out about operations such as this. We wonder why people are leaving the business?!

I tuned into WGTY tonight for the first time in a few weeks - Boom Boom Cannon is GONE! Does anyone know what happened??? Thanks
Jim
