WGUN 1010am's New Award!

[size=16pt]I'll be a monkey's uncle, WGUN has done it again! E.S.D. Inc. of Greater New York, evaluates radio stations in the top ten rated markets in the U.S. Each station, each year, is judged for the best imaging in the market, all factors are used in judging.

WGUN 1010am
Altanta Georgia's 2009
Third Place Winner!

We are told it's the first time in 15 years an AM station in this market (Atlanta) has been nominated for the award! So, as DJ for Doo Wop Dreaming, I say, "kudos to the development and imaging team of WGUN 1010am"

DJ Robinson (PD) & Georgia Salva (GM) have done a fantastic job!

I'm gonna need a third-place ophthamologist after getting a peek of that crazy font face...

If WGUN is #3, who on earth is #1 & #2. And who nominates and who votes. Never heard of this award.

I guess it's kinda cool then that you just found out that there is a company that does rate station imaging, they do TV as well as Radio so it's pretty cool! And as far as 1st & 2nd place go, I don't know who they are but I'm really not interested, I'm just congratulating WGUN on getting 3rd place! It's pretty awesome since last year we weren't even Arbitron rated because we fell off the grid and now we are back and stronger than ever and getting rewarded for it! So, I'm not complaining!

I bet the station manager just got a bunch of money from some widow in Nigeria, too...

So does this company that gives these awards have a website? I suppose I could start an organization and give Clear Channel an award for best live local news show in Atlanta, too.

Is this like the award a Connecticut "nurse" received, naming her "Nurse of the Year" from the "Connecticut Nurse's Association"? Betty Lichtenstein of Norwalk won the presitgious award and was honored at the Nurses Association banquet. Trouble is; she wasn't named "Nurse of the Year," there is no "Connecticut Nurse's Association" and she's not even a nurse!

Wow you could actually make a living writing novels if you wanted! And if you wanted to give clear channel an award go ahead, I'm sure you're credible enough!

Why don't you look into that and get back to me! And that stinks for Betty Lichtenstein, she should've tried harder in life to become a nurse and maybe she'd have gotten the award.......Oh Well! But, definately look into it if you want and get back to me on that!

But WGUN will NEVER, EVER, be voted #1 for listening at work!!!

Probably not, but I've gotten a lot of listeners on the show that tell me as soon as they leave work they hurry to their car to crank it on! So, it's cool knowing that! And I think some people are missing the point of my post it's not to brag about being ranked at a high number it's too congratulate climbing up the ladder of struggle that comes in the Atlanta radio market! So, it's not about being #1, 2 or 3 but just being noticed that makes me proud of it!

So DJSkyrider since this was really a way to promote your show/self, etc., what did you do before this? ..market..station..you came with a dream and a vision, I guess. But what did you give up to take on this challenge?

Well I'll be honest with you, because it's the best policy some say; I didn't come to this market or station expecting to be a DJ at all! I was actually making a successful career as a bartender in between jobs this opportunity came to me, a guy with no previous experience in radio, no broadcasting school diploma, no know it all broadcasting major. Nope, everything I know I learned hands on, I actually started as a Sales Rep for WGUN and it's sister stations WAAC, WLYX, WGOV of Valdosta and like every other business I worked for, I studied every area of the business from sales, to traffic, to production, to board operator and to programming! Soon, I became the internet coordinator, followed by becoming a circuit rider for all the stations and soon after that a DJ on the station! I developed a knack for being very social when previously bartending which helped in so many ways! And trust me I know to all the experienced DJ's and radio personalities out there, that my story is something to laugh at but I really don't care because I enjoy what I do, I love the music and you can't beat the listeners they are incredible & loyal people! If that didn't answer your questions I don't know what will! And the origination of this post was to congratulate the PD & GM, anything beyond that was in response to peoples point of views!

And if I was trying to promote myself and not WGUN for it's award I wouldn't have told you I knew nothing about radio before this job!

When I made this post I had hoped some listeners who enjoy the station, were going to be happy to hear that, so far it's not the case!

I think our resident WGUN shill missed the B98.5 joke as it flew over his head...

I won't deny it, the joke totally flew over my head, but that would of been a hard one for me anyways cause I have never followed or listened to B98.5! Until you mentioned them, I never even knew they existed, but again that's my own short comings with my radio dial!

OK, here are the latest results for listening at work in ATL:

1. WSB-FM (B98.5)

[EDIT - Radio-Info TOS prohibits posting copyrighted material in its entirety.]

87. WGUN
88. WGST

There IS no award...There IS no ESD of Greater NY. I spent a little time last night trying to see who or what this might be. Closest thing is the "Engineering Society of Detroit" and they don't care about imaging or Atlanta or much at all except posting pictures of engineers holding tubes..if it had been even a little prestigous it would have been noted SOMEWHERE here on Radio Info..or All Access, or SOMEWHERE..but no cigar fellas

BUT..I have to say...even if Sky Rider purchases the time to be on the air at WGUN..I gotta love his excitement about this business. Don't see many from the bigger company owned stations posting anywhere about how much they appreciate and enjoy their listeners or their managers. It's in every way that cheezy WGUN is the goofiest of radio stations, but hell this kind of enchantment with an industry we all used to love so much is kinda cool to see these days.

You go DJ Sky Rider..play "I Wonder Why" just one more time for the grey bearded man in the corner. You need a few bucks to buy another hour..I'll send you some via Pay Pal.

He probably does not PURCHASE time on WGUN. According to reports----he may be some fairely close relative of the owner. He may even have a minority interest in the station...again according to reports.

Nothing wrong with being the family cheerleader.....cough.

The station has always been a unique listen. SOme of the Rivers' other stations fit the same mold---a unique listen. I am thinking of the old WSWN in Belle Glade, and the FM that went along with WSWN. WGOV back in the day had its moments as well.

Now based on the listenership I can see from all of us RI users---they may crack a blip in the PPM this time around!

Of course there's no award like that. but its ok.. WGUN will continue to be a block programming station, that will program what they want, when they want..
Is it REALLY cheesy? Yes, its so Cheesy I smell it over here. Its really hard to listen to, and with a signal like they have you would think that they would want to sound more pro, but they will always be good ole, strange indeed... WGUN.
