WGUN AM

It seems that the smaller stations struggle to pay bills, including payroll. But hey, we do it because its in the blood right?

If they had some decent programming... they might not have as much problems getting advertisers... but because of the type of programming they run... they will never get the kind that can pay the bills.

I like the old time radio programming on WGUN. There are lot's of Red Skelton shows in their archives and I really enjoy them.
The Big Gun has the same problem most AMs have today. At least it is different.....maybe even a little schizo. But we need more of that......

New developments with Rivers Radio. Rumor has it that Georgia Salva was alledgedly arrested last week for shoplifting and W-2 FORMS have still yet to be sent out to company employees. Bo Rivers has control over all the properties now WGUN, WAAC, WGOV, and WLYX..The drama continues..

A check of the FCC database shows that an application for involuntary transfer of control was filed on 2-28-11. Georgia Salva used to manage the ED Rivers trust which holds 50.98%(majority) ownership of the remaining Rivers stations. This filing would seem to mean Georgia is no longer trustee and in control of the station. The application does not show Bo Rivers as the receiver - it is a woman named Laura Dyke.......
She (Georgia) still owns, between her and her kids, the other 49.02 %
The family has been squabbling for years over these stations - ever since E.D. Rivers Jr. (Dee) died.

Is this the same Rivers family that owned the Cordele and East Point stations years ago? I seem to recall they got in trouble over something and were made to sell them.

That was the JAMES Rivers side of the family. James was the brother of E.D. Rivers Sr, Georgia's honorable gub - ner back in the 30's. "Big Ed" had a son, E.D. jr - better known as "Dee," who owned the other group of stations. Dee owned WGUN, James owned WTJH.
It was the James Rivers side which ran afoul of FCC rules. The story I remember is fraudulent billing practices - the FCC forced him to liquidate all the properties, and to minority buyers. I also remember James' son committed suicide afterwards - rumor was he was deeply involved.
I would love to hear the factual details from someone who was there......

I know nobody wants a daytimer (except Salem with WAFS and WNIV, and of course Jack Weber), and you can look at WCFO's ratings (or even WGST's) as to why. But I am surprised someone hasn't ridden in and just written a check with enough zeros on it. WGUN seems to have a better signal than WCFO (or WNIV), at least.

20 or so years ago, I knew someone with radio dreams--and little else--who wanted to buy that station and put a kids' format on it. This was long before Radio Disney.

Last time I talked to her broker, she was asking for $10 million. Which makes $5 million for 610 seem generous by comparison! ::)

I have been told that the trust was setup in such a way as to prohibit the sale of the stations. If that is true then you could only buy a minority interest - the trust is 50.98% and would be the controlling interest.
I'm not sure who would want a radio station bad enough to pay $10M for a minority interest.......
