WGUN offering live DOGS as a prize???

Man somebody ought to call the humane society on this one. I realize it is a legitamate K9 Security company putting the "prize" up, but c'mon! WGUN is running a promo offering an "Adult female doberman and a cute male puppy" as a PRIZE in a contest! There are SO many poor dogs and cats that cannot find homes (no contest needed) at the many overflowing shelters all over the country that this kind of stupidity is downright immoral! Maybe the many "preachers" who are on the "religious and reflection segment" of this station should think about how in-humane this could be. How might the recipients of the dogs treat them if the were "won in a contest" Somebody in Atlanta call Fox 5, or the "Saving Georgia Dogs" website. To me, this is really desparate and pathetic. OR am I out of line here?

Yeah, you are out of line.

It's a contest, they aren't forcing dogs on people and not everyone wants a shelter dog.

If you want to play alarmist and everything radio sucks, try this way...

OH MY GOD SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET SUED FOR THIS WHEN ONE OF THESE DOGS ATTACKS SOMEONE. THIS IS WHY RADIO SUCKS.
You must be new here.

Mr warrior..I respect your opinions, however when people "win prizes" living creatures included.. they are more likely to regard them with less value. Ask any veternarian if this is a suitable idea and they will set you straight. Certainly if someone wants a pure-bred dog, or cat..by all means go to a responsible breeder..purchase and enjoy your pet, and make the commitment to feed, shelter, and care for it...but I have been around here for many years my friend..and in broadcasting for over 40 years, and as far as I am concerned this is just wrong on so many levels. Of course WGUN may continue with this and the sponsor may do as they will, but I was only expressing my opinion about something I feel strongly about. My inquiry as to whether I was out of line was out of respect for those like you who would not approve of my thoughts..so I am sorry if I set you off.

I still firmly believe that offering a dog as a prize is not smart or humane.

Have a fine holiday season...alarmist? Nope, just an animal lover man.

I don't know that Jeff needs a body guard or a PR vice president to defend him. His response to you probably says most of what needs to be said.

If I were going to name five or ten people who are long time, level headed participants in this forum, Jeff Laurence would be at the top of the list. Unlike some participants in these discussions who delight in slicing and dicing people, Jeff nurtures a lot of talent and wanna-bees in the PRODUCTION topic where the voice over folks trade topics.

Jeff must be new here? Pull up his profile and see when he signed into the group. Then pull up your own profile and see how long you have been here.

Maybe Jeff is not the one who is "out of line" in this conversation. Maybe a man who along with his wife operates a miniature ranch where animals are loved and cared for speaks with some credibility and authority.

but what do I know. I'm just the Goat Rodeo Cowboy.

Georgia Salva, who owns the station, is a very devoted animal lover, and the radio station is almost a marketing arm for her animal causes.

I can see how it may strike some as an odd promotion, but I'm certain her intentions are very honorable.

When I first saw the threat title, I was expecting a tie-in with the recent Eagles/Falcons game (Michael Vick's return to the area).

How might the recipients of the dogs treat them if the were "won in a contest"
"might"? - a hypothetical argument, so here's another one:
How might the dogs be treated if there was no contest and nobody "won" them?

While one would see the contest as immoral, another would see it a way to find a home for the dogs. (An adult doberman and her puppy are not that cheap.)

Makes you wonder what kind of thread this would be if the "prize" was baby chicks.

Delicious baby chicks?

Well, from an 'It's different" point of view, it's a good contest. From the perspective that it puts a large dog or two into an unknown home situation, it's a very bad idea. The breed is not the answer for everyone. What do you do when someone in a condo wins the contest? The dog then ends up in a shelter.
Remember the Rule when a dog is involved: the dog always loses. And, an adult dog in a shelter is a Dead Dog Walking, they're very hard to adopt out. A large breed dog takes the space of several smaller dogs - ges who gets killed first when room gives out at the shelter?
Weighing both sides, I got to think this one is one the whole a Bad Idea. She needs to drop it in favor of something else.

Why would you enter this contest if you didn't want the prize?

Well we know one thing at least....! WGUN is getting lots and lots of Mentions on here.. Must be doing something right..! With some tweaking of the music, and some REAL programming genuius it could be a listened to station with the right mixes. Morning show is a fun one.. Rest of day is really a tough listen.
Georgia at least is trying to make a medium market station work. Gotta give her some props for that.
Some of the late adds of some softer 70s along with the standards really sounds good. No one else is doing that. But Rev Rolloff in the afternoon's.... Uh needs to be moved at least..!

Um, ever answered radio request lines when a contest is going on? At least half of the people calling have no idea what they're winning, they just want to win. If they want the prize, great. If not, then they sell it. Or give it away. Or dump it in the woods to "fend for itself." I feel really sad for these dogs and don't believe that station management has thought this one through very well.

Ah yes, the "I won a dog so I will go pick it up and then go release it in the woods" deal.

Happens all the time.

Fabricate things much?

Points for the people on the contest line though. How many times have I heard "We'll take the first caller with the CORRECT answer..." only to have the next 590 callers say "I dunnknow. Do I still win?" :(
