WGUN

Listened to WGUN on the way home today. Had a great signal, and a good mix of music (if you like real oldies). The new 45k CH signal was as good as anything else on the AM dial (except for You Know Who) and better than WGST. Eminently listenable with little static or interference, all the way to the 5:30 PM powerdown to 78W when it practically dropped off the dial, although you could still hear the signal behind the static.

One thing I thought was weird: Instead of playing more music, they kept playing promos for the station over and over between songs. I only heard one real spot (for a Kia-Hyundai dealer in Valdosta); perhaps they should can some of the station promos and promote "more music". If they did that, it would really be worth a listen for the light spot load alone.

So now they are really a 50KW “daytimer” (using the old four times power to double coverage rule of thumb the 5 KW will have little effect.) I agree with Jabba 17, they should really think about a full time oldies format for the demographically challenged 50 + crowd, complete with some jingles and a little echo. They could hire a good staff “on the cheap”. Experience in a top 10 market will get you an “on air PD job” in at lot the lower 100 markets. A little success in the ratings should cover the expenses and you might make a few $$.

Please tell me that those promos featured the "gun blast" sound effects that they have used in the past. I would feel sad without the frequent gun fire on 1010.

The Governor is probably rolling over in his grave as he watches what his heirs have done to his once proud radio properties. This is a prime example of why a psychological exam should be required for license renewal.

I haven't listened to more than PM drive, but if their broadcast day is as schizo as it has been in the past, they will have issues. I didn't hear any religious content during PM drive, but a lot of promos for it at other times. They DO need to update their website, which is horrid for even a DIY job.

Frankly, I'm surprised how many small religious broadcasters still try to make a go at it on AM with Salem being the big dog on the porch with WNIV and WLTA, not to mention the Internet's superiority for cost-effective narrowcasting. But I've mentioned that before.

If they want to keep the "preachin' and teachin'", they should try to place it out of drivetime/lunchtime listening--maybe 9-11 and/or 2-4 weekdays or something like that.

Processing was good but could be more "authentic" with some echo. With that signal they don't need to "compress and go loud" so much.

They still have the "gunshot" sfx.

This website is better:

http://www.biggunradio.com/home.html

They have a trio of stations in Valdosta--WGOV, a 3.5kW AM daytimer; WLYX, a 50kW C2; and WAAC, a 100kW C1.

Apparently they are selling spots on all 4 stations as a unit--hence the Valdosta car dealer on WGUN.

That globe is spinning backwards.

Either they didn't notice or don't care. Scary indeed.

Vonage still runs TV spots with that same problem. I recall back in the early 1980s when ABC or NBC news launched one of the first big ultra expnesive CG news graphics packages and had to hide their tail between their legs when the damn globe was spinning backwards and had to pay to get the whole thing redone. Guess the lesson from that is long forgotten now.

WOW!!!! The website IS wild!!! I personally don`t like the gun pointing at the cross. However, the globe spinning backwards is VERY funny! I LOVE the big GUN and logo!!! Something about the website SCREAMS 1965!!!! Cool and RETRO!!! Nice to not see everything so polished! Go to the WGUN website for alot of laughs!!!!!!!

By the way, their globe graphic reminds me of the one from the CBS Soap Opera "As The World Turns" from the 1960`s-1970`s. Except, the one on there was spinning the CORRECT way-LOL!!!!

Are they giving away a live dog for the Holidays like a year or so ago? Man that was embarrassing and sad. I understand the principle owners are big time animal lovers, but that was really bad stuff.

I heard them giving away local spots to some cleaner that had WGUN on in their establishment and they were "awarded" a week of free commercials!

I also know of one business in Conyers that was contacted by some boiler room operation hawking a campaign on a "big powerful Atlanta" station..they never told the prospective client which station it was..only that it was as "powerful as any radio in town" (yup just like that..not radio station...just "radio"). Turned out you might end up with commercials on either 1040 or 1010.

And one sales person contacted another radio station in a smaller nearby town to ask if there were any extra clients that they would recommend for her to call to sell time on WGUN!

The stories go on and on. And that gun effect is the best. Hope they never drop that.

I think that's the new radio and media sales and marketing model; contact your direct competition to ask for referrals. It works like a charm ;)

I think they could do well with more 50's soul music. When 640 AM first went on the air, when it was owned by Michael Hollis and before it switched to WGST, they played the Heart and Soul Network and got a 2.0 share with no promotion at all. But I have one request for WGUN. Please, please stop playing so many promos and stop playing the Love American Style bed. It doesn't make any sense in the context of the format!

I agree. Until they sell some spots they should emphasize "more music, less talk". And with True Oldies/AGH moving forward a decade, they could fill the 50s/60s void. With proper processing they could have a really good "period" sound.

And the "Love American Style" bed gets really annoying...especially when you hear it the third time in a single break.

Where's GoodTimesAndGreatOldies when you need him? :)
